Is the NFL concussion protocol working?

I was listening to a KC Chiefs podcast last night. they were talking about how they believe Mahomes actually did have a Concussion after the hit in the fourth quarter. I went back and watched the replay a few times. I have to agree.

I believe he did not know where he was after the play. he had that 1000 yard stare if you look at closeup pictures. he required significant help to exit the field.

I am sure this same thing has happened to many Quarterbacks. I know this has happened to Brady. Giselle has said as much. The QB position is too valuable to lose your starter for even one week, so i think the rules are being bent to keep these guys on the field.

Head injuries are no joke.

    Who knows, everyone is different.

I think a lot of claims by ex players is a money grab attempt in my opinion.

With that being said if a guy takes a blow to the head like Mahomes did then he should be taken out of the game from first look but in reality he might be ok. If they continue to evaluate a guy upon a blow to the head then it’s better than it was previously

I love football as much as anyone, I am just genuinely concerned about these guys after they retire. I understand that they know what they are getting into when they sign an NFL contract. you can rehab and have surgery to repair joints, ligaments or other soft tissue injuries, but there is no rehab for brain injuries. only time. and after the first one, the 2nd is more easily gotten and so on.

they are still studying the effects of repeated and traumatic brain injury, and it is pretty scary.

I guess i am all for a guy trying to tough out and play through a knee or a shoulder or a quad etc. but it is different witn the brain. these players are wired differently from you and I, and I think that there are times they need the coaches/team docs to save them from themselves.

I was watching that game when it happened, Mahomes took a pretty good knee to the head, I thought taking him out of the game was the right thing to do to be on the safe side.

it is not going to be pretty. just take a look at the players from the not-as-big & not-as-fast days who are still alive today. conduct a search on the 72 Dolphins sometime. move a little closer and look at the 85 Bears. it got to a point where i couldn't bring myself to read anymore. i could give countless examples, but here's one: Dave Duerson was the stud strong safety on that Bears team. his brain injuries from football were so severe that he committed suicide. shot himself in the chest back in 2011.

the players of today are shaving years off of their lives to play this sport

you'll never be able to outrun a bad diet

what you say is true. look at Junior Seau. I absolutely love this sport, but it is absolutely brutal. in fact, I will not allow my son to play. If it were just broken bones or torn ligaments, it would be ok. you can get repaired from that. I have seen the effects of traumatic brain injury and it isnt pretty and there is really no fix.

NFL players are tough. way tougher than me. I think that hurts them to some degree in this topic. you cannot see a brain injury, you can still run as fast and lift as much, but it is still there.

They made a documentary about the effects of concussions over a period of time, the documentary is called league of denial, I watched it a few years back and it is shocking, the Troy Aikman story they talk about is scary.

This is what a normal healthy brain looks like compared to a brain with CTE, the healthy brain is on top.

    that is really not good.

I have heard that Aikman story before. think of how many times that has happened in the history of the NFL. It would be a staggering number if we knew

didnt aaron hernandez have CTE as well?

Yes, I believe Aaron Hernandez had it, as did Junior Seau and neither one of those stories ended well.
