Regarding this coin:

Bowers and Ruddy said in 1982:
The standard weight suggests this is an original, but the coin has heavy wire rims associated with restrikes, and the latter attribution is more probable.

Any thoughts on the restrike vs. original status of this coin?

Large berries and the ribbon is closed inside the wreath, so it looks like an Original to me. Just my opinion though.

Good comments.PCGS agrees with you! The note on being a restrike is from a 1982 catalog.

Here's a restrike from PCGS which has the two artifacts you describe followed by the OP coin again for comparision.

    First Restrike

    Heritage said in 2021:

    First Restrike, B-2

1843 1/2 C First Restrike, B-2, R.6, PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. Diagnostics for the B-2 (First Restrike) variety include the small reverse berries and doubling at the bottom-right upright of the T in CENT. Walter Breen reported 25 to 30 pieces known in his 1988 Complete Encyclopedia. This near-Gem showcases iridescent blue, magenta, violet, green, and orange patina over golden-brown and brick-red surfaces. Contact is trivial for this proof-only representative. Our EAC grade PR64.

Here are diagnostics on the first and second retrikes from USACoinBook.com on photos from Heritage:

    USACoinBook.com said:
One major variety of the 1843 Braided Hair Half Cent (Penny) is the Second Restrike version which was produced later on around 1859 for collectors. This can be identified by noting that the berries on the reverse of the coin are much smaller than the original version. In addition: There are small die file marks above the letters "RICA" in the word "AMERICA" on the reverse of the coin. The letter "T" in the word "CENT" is not doubled so this helps distinguish the second restrike from the first restrike. The difference between the 1843 braided hair half cent original vs first restrike vs second restrike is depicted below in the example comparison image (Source of example images are courtesy of Heritage Auction Galleries):
