Mattress Mack is at it again!

He stands to make a boatload if the Astros win it all.

‘Mattress Mack’ set to cash largest sports bet payout ever if Astros win

Jim McIngvale smiles before throwing a ceremonial first pitch prior to the game between the Houston Astros and the New York Yankees at Minute Maid Park.
Jim McIngvale, a businessman from Houston who also goes by the name “Mattress Mack,” is back in the news.

The owner and operator of the Gallery Furniture retail chain is potentially in line for the largest payoff in legal gambling history. All he needs is for the Houston Astros to defeat either the Atlanta Braves or Los Angeles Dodgers in the World Series. If they do, his $2 million bet at Caesars will turn into $20 million (over $35 million in total when adding in other bets made by McIngvale).

And what will “Mattress Mack” do if he wins? Well, give away mattresses to his customers, of course.

Mack estimates that his mattress promotion, which would refund all customers who spent over $3,000 if the Astros win the Series, would cost around $20 million in total. That would mean his offset winnings (including all futures bets placed in June) would be around $15.5 million.

“Whoever Houston is playing, we’re massive fans for the next few weeks. The size of that bet will make every other selection a winner. As long as it’s not Houston, we’re happy,” Caesars Sportsbook vice president of trading Craig Mucklow told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Mack was previously gifted a Houston Astros World Series ring back in 2018.

    ..........
I have heard of him, and if I remember correctly I first learned of him on this very forum. I am not in the Houston area, I live several hours north near Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW). I think I remember @galaxy27 talking about this guy before. So, I guess we'll leave it up to @2dueces to decide whether or not you'll be having shirt for dinner.

He's a bigtime bettor, Mattress Mack placed a big bet on the Bucs this past super bowl.

'Mattress Mack' wins $3.46 million on Super Bowl bet

Gallery Furniture owner "Mattress Mack" Jim McIngvale is known for playing huge bets on big sporting events.

Mattress Mack bet big on the Super Bowl underdog and it paid off.

Jim McIngvale bet $3.46 million on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers +3.5 points in Sunday's Super Bowl. The Bucs thrashed the Chiefs 31-9, making McIngvale an easy winner. Tampa Bay was a 3.5-point underdog, meaning, for McIngvale to win his bet, all the Bucs had to do was not lose by more than three points. They didn't need any points.

McIngvale placed the bet through DraftKings on Thursday.

As usual, McIngvale’s bet was his way of hedging one of his in-store promotions. Like he has done for other big sporting events in the past, McIngvale’s Gallery Furniture stores offered customers a chance to win free furniture if the Bucs won. If customers spent $3,000 or more on a Tempur-Pedic, Sealy or Stearns & Foster mattress/box spring and/or adjustable base, they get their money back since Tampa Bay won.

"I think it's great," McIngvale told Fox 26's Mark Berman after the game. "Obviously, Tampa Bay played terrific. The happiest thing for me is so many customers were thrilled watching that game with their families. They're getting a free mattress and they made the right choice buying from us during this promotion. Our customers believe in us and put their faith and trust in us. It doesn't get much better than that. It's a very happy night for me."

According to Action Network's Darren Rovell, it was the biggest bet placed on this year’s Super Bowl, supplanting a $2.3 million wager someone placed on the Bucs at BetMGM last week.

In 2019, McIngvale bet about $13 million on the Astros to beat the Nationals in the World Series as a way to hedge against his in-store promotion. The Nationals beat the Astros in seven games.

This sounds like what Jordan's Furniture did here in NE back in 2007. They told customers to buy their furniture during a specific time period and if the Red Sox won the World Series they'd get reimbursed everything they had paid for their furniture during that time period. IIRC Jordan's paid out over 50M back to their customers that year then they ran other promotions like this in the following years.

But is the Astros wager really gambling? More of a hedge on the sales promotion.
