That coin is going to be acceptable to many, many collectors. What will it bring? Who knows?
I'd be a bit surprised if it surpasses the $2,500. purchase price plus grading fees and eBay fees costs.

It went for $738 with buyer's premium.
Not sure if this is the exact same variety since NGC didn't attribute it the same, but this seller has a strait graded XF40 CAC for BIN $1695. If its the same coin I'm not sure why someone would pay $2500 for an ungraded coin with poor quality overexposed photos. Definitely makes me go "Hmm".

The variety makes all the difference
People makes mistakes at the buy. I assume he just wanted to get whatever he could out of it rather thanhave it sit around for twenty-fifty years trying to wait for someone to come along to "make him whole".
