I will do a quick hitter Friday afternoon.
Kiss me twice.....let's party.
Taking son to his first Chantilly Show on Sunday. I will get him some Pokemon cards. As for me, probably pick up some supplies.
Taking my two sons Friday. Anyone know if PSA or SGC will be set up there?
Hmmm, right down the road, almost...maybe attend my 1st show ever just to get a taste. Wonder what plans my SO already made.
The Chantilly Show would be a nice first show. I haven't been in a couple of years but in general it's a fairly large show.

At these big shows, does anyone try to sell high end PSA to dealers directly? Is it still cash is king?
Some tidbits about Chantilly. Nice show. About 60 - 70 dealers. I collect "vintage" 60's, 70's, and early 80's for the most part. About 10 - 12 dealers had a nice assortment of these cards. I picked mostly 1973, 1974 and 1975 stars. Rose, Ryan, Aaron mostly. The ones that look they may grade 8 and up were difficult to find. But i think I found a few.
More PSA cards there than last time I went. Lots of nice Mantle's, Rose's, Ryan's etc in high grade. Prices for the graded were a little steep. Not many deals to be had. I bought exactly 0 graded cards. I did pick up a really nice 1961 Juan Marichal. Wasn't really looking for him, but I noticed it in the case and took a look at it. I had a small "looking glass/lens" so that I could get a better view of the corners etc. The card looked really sharp. Corners were around PSA 7 range, maybe slightly better, surface looked great, centering left to right great was nearly perfect, top to bottom off some around a 6 or 7. I have a PSA 7 in my collection and this one is slightly better, hoping for a 7 or 7.5.
Overall I had a great time. Stan from Cleveland sold me several really sharp cards, he had a tremendous inventory. I should have spent more time at his station.
It's getting harder and harder to find the nice mid 70's, etc in nice condition at a reasonable price. Absolutely no one had OPC cards. 0 PSA graded OPC cards.
The crowd was good but not packed. I would say average.
Made it half way there from Rochester NY, got a call from my oldest son's nurse and she cancelled for the weekend (son has CP and has a weekend nurse). So we had to turn around and come home. Hopefully next time.
June 24 - 26 Chantilly. I picked some great cards in October. Look forward to finding more. Biggest Highlights:
1975 Pete Rose, under looking glass saw no cardboard on the corners only red and yellow. Centering may keep it from a 10. its about 60-40 Paid 50
1973: Brooks, 100% centered looks close to a 10. paid 8
1974 Ryan, perfect centering, psa 8 probably, one iffy corner. paid 20
1961 Juan Marichal, looks like a solid seven, centering is a little above average for this card. Hoping for a 7.5 paid 200
1977 Payton, perfect centering, sharp corners, should at least be an 8 paid 75
1975 Ryan, near perfect centering, sharp corners, card is slight faded on the front. Hopefully a 7 or 8 paid 50
1973 franco, perfect centering, sharp corners, should be an 8. paid 50.
i bought a lot more and some were as nice, like a 1973 carew and mays, 1974 aaron's. 1968 topps game mays
Picked up some nice topps tiffany's also. Several ryan's, bo's. and a 1984 tiffany mattingly.
Oh hell yeah I'm going. Those dealers better bring basketball cards.
He's my review from the April 2022 show: Very crowded for a Friday, much more crowded than pre-pandemic days on a Friday. Seemed to be a lot of different dealers (and more of them) than pre-pandemic days. Some of the long time dealers usually at this show seemed to be gone and others were in slightly different locations than the old shows. Also, dealers seemed to have their usual same stuff, but were in a smaller physical space. Signs weren't as prevalent/obvious. I'm told that this will be the configuration going forward. I don't like the configuration as much, but maybe it will take getting used to. There was room for more dealer tables in an overflow room, but they may not want anymore. Because, the autograph area is in that overflow room, so the crowd won't bleed into the dealers tables. There were very few little kids at the show today. Not sure if there will be more on Saturday and/or Sunday. To his credit, I think the promoter wants this to be a card show with some autograph guests rather an an autograph show with some cards.
Lots of (what we old-timers) call "the shiny crap" in all sports. Seemed to be a fewer tables of the 10 for $1 cards, although there were still some. Lots of autograph cards, patch cards, etc,...Very little vintage in all sports. Very little memorabilia in all sports. Only saw a few auction houses setup.
Trying for Friday again. Will be interested to see if there are any panicking sellers, especially amongst the newbie dealer crowd. Market really down and bottom not in sight IMO.
Kiss me twice.....let's party.
new stuff could be pressured; vintage probably not so much.
Went this morning. It was a mob scene. Surprised frankly. Lots of traffic at tables, but didn’t see a lot in f deals going down.
Hobby would appear to be in good shape given the crowd.

He's my review from this June 2022 show on Friday only: Very similar to the review from the April 2022 show (see above), but a little less crowded than the Friday of April's show. And, I also did NOT see a lot of deals being done. One vintage baseball card dealer said this Friday was his worst Friday ever.
I found a couple deals on graded hockey but in general prices for graded RCs that I collect were well above eBay. Pretty good selection of modern RCs (80s and later) so if you had to have it, you probably could find it. However, you would most likely have to pay through the nose for it (30%-100% over eBay).
There were a ton of tables, I didn't make it to them all due to time constraints.

went friday and today. most dealers ive seen. cards and memorabilia. prices high. great overall traffic. basketball is still hot. boxes selling well. i don't collect modern so i can't speak to that. i bought lots of 70's stuff.ryan jackson rose, etc.did pick up 2 marlboro johnson's for $3 each. the bigger sellers were doing well. vintage graded was at a premium.
one other update, many dealers are not real happy with psa. one dude just sent in 23 mantles to sgc because they will return the cards in 10 days. the time lapse, the failure to grade cards within a year, and still no timely nor competittive grading.
several dealers are really happy with sgc and said their values were barely behind psa at this point. there was another tpg, cgs at the show, they seem to be gaining a little steam also, mainly because they will timely grade your cards.
imo, psa needs to open back up and grade.
$15, minimum 250. for the rest of the year. means 3750 for psa every order and don't have to worry about thousands of $300 orders. they make money without getting hammered at the same time.
Was at this show and felt I noticed a huge shift. Felt like 20 to 30% of what was there was Pokemon. Had been going to this show close to every time minus some absences during the heart of the pandemic. But would say 3 to 4 years ago I was surprised to find one or two people selling Pokemon or TCG. I like it all so I think its neat. Also cool to see really small people looking at stuff too and having to wait your turn behind them. I think that element is bringing younger people to the shows which is cool. Dad goes for his sports stuff and son or daughter can come and enjoy it too.
I love going but often dont find that thing that really jumps out at me and dont spend just to spend. But almost always enjoy engaging with the folks there. Did buy one Pokemon card. Unfortunately it looked better there than when I got it home but all good. Glad to add it.
Did you see any Jim Brown rookies in the PSA 7 & PSA 8 range? I am curious to see what they had them priced for.
For comparison at the 2019 National PSA 8's went for roughly 16K.
Thanks, BC

I recently (about a month ago) reached out to a guy within PSA to communicate this very thing. I wanted them to know the tone in the community was definitely turning against them, and felt they should know (especially since I've invested so much in their grading!). The guy told me he would pass it up the chain and probably get some kind of response.
Nothing at all as far as any sort of response...
I did see a few. One in particular. I think it was a PSA 7. and i saw several raw ones. The guy that had the PSA 7, had high end stuff, like 1968 rose psa 8.5, 1965 mays psa 8 centered, etc. He was asking some high prices. The Jim Brown looked really nice. I have no idea how much he was asking.
Thank you outside linebacker! I wish I could have played on Defense, being bigger I always got stuck on the Offensive line and I hated it. There is nothing exciting about playing left guard...lol. It's the main reason I stopped playing Football after my Freshmen season.

Played middle linebacker in high school and outside in college. Also played fullback in high school.
That's very cool you played at the Collegiate level, congrats! My Dad played College Football in the late 50's. I had the skill set but didn't apply myself as well as I should have.
BTW that's almost all the head knocker positions besides wedge buster on ST. Do you have any issues with CTE?
