Jefferson Nickels: Glad to Hear It!

From David Hall's website today: "Jeffersons are selling a lot better now. Three months ago, Jeffersons were taking a back seat to all the action with Washington quarters, Lincoln cents, Roosevelt dimes, and modern commems. Now Jeffersons have joined the party. The action is in all price ranges and centered around MS65 or better coins with "Full Steps". The proofs are also doing quite well. This market has a lot of potential and my recommendation is to BUY. "

Van Simmons' comments in the most recent DHRC newsletter are similarly glowing about the market in general.

Great news, and the market does seem to be picking up steam, but does DH ever recommend selling?

Does DHRC's comments have anything to do with the series being weighted?

He has a list of around 30 categories of coinage, and he rotates through them every day each month, taking the temperature of the market. Today it's Jeffersons.

Right now, it seems, 'most everything is HOT HOT HOT! (So don't delay, mail before midnight tomorrow. . . .)

How much of this is dealer hype, and how much is "real"? Is inventory truly "drying up"?

If you are a seller I guess it is good news. If you are a buyer - probably higher prices - bad news!!

Maybe more coins will ultimately come on the market due to higher prices?

Jeffersons are certainly getting more press.

In the July 9 issue of Numismatic News there was a two page article entitled' "Jeffersons moving on up after a stale period". The article closes by stating, "It would not be correct to suggest that Jefferson nickels will be soaring in price in the near future."

I guess the author didn't look at full step prices.

Moderns have been quietly soaring for years now. Suddenly it's not so quiet!

  • I wonder if we really are at the start of a long bull market in coins. Or do these folks always sound bullish? Both could be true!

I guess the good thing about type collecting is we can go for the least popular type. Well at least I can as I have many holes to fill image I've been looking at Type 1 proof Buffalos and they are expensive. Even the type 2 1937 in 66 is now significantly more than the '37 in 67 I bought years back.

Seriously, the top grade proof Jeffs seem fairly strong. But the next step down seems cheap. For example I saw more than one '50s Jeff in 67 DCAM go for under a grand. There are very few DCAMs so that seems a real bargain. The ones in 68 DCAM (highest grade) might go for 3 grand or more.
  • Carl: I watch the auctions. They give me, I feel, a good reflection on the high end of the market activity. Also, auctions reflect more of collector interest, than dealers. For instance, in the recent Issac Edmund's sale, the Walker and Franklin half series seemed to be the weakest. These were followed by Peace Dollars. Of course being a Contrarian, I bought a nice PCGS '28-S Peace Dollar for a reasonable price, along with some Franklins.image
I have never seen a Peace Dollar that I did not like!!

I'm glad they're going up. It's been an overlooked area for quite some time.image
