Not that he needs it but I'm here to vouch for these '63s and Al. I have one proudly sitting in my Reg Set now from him! On top of that, there may be several gentlemen here as great as Al is to deal with, but none finer. Thanks Al, and when you say you were hoping for a 7, there's no doubt in my mind that these would go 7 and probably will one day. Dave

    Dave,
Thanks, nice to hear good thing on the board even if it was directed at meimageimageimage.Al
  • Hi Al,

Sweet condition rarity to make. I don't have much free cash at present, but if they don't sell let me know. I've tried twice already to make a 66.

Ok so I read this post and noticed a 63 in 66RD was going for $200. So I think, WOW I have a couple of these in OBW rolls. I'll have at least a few 66's and prehaps a 67 or 2. Well this date seems to be much like the othe P dates in the 50's with the splotches but I think I mustered up at least 2 solid 66's but would agree on the pop being low because it seems like a hard date to get quality coins in. So next I go to the Pop reports and see that they are quite low especially in the 63-D's in 66 or >. I purchased a really nice hoard or OBW rolls more than a year ago, actually the rolls are not technically OBW because the original owner had taken out the pennies and wrapped them in foil the moment he got the rolls. This has the advantage of keeing the coins mint bright. Anyway I went through the 63-D roll that had not been touched in nearly 40 years and found at least 6 MS66's with prehaps a 67 or 3. Since the pop on these is 6/0 in ms66RD what do you sugget I do? Is the Pop only low now because memorials are not as agressively collected as wheats or is the pop low because its a hard date?
PCGS are being pains right now so my chances at getting a 67 are 0 even with a flawless coin -> see my rant on the flawless 58 that came back as a 66.
  • I wish I knew the answer to that one clackamas. I thought the same thing on my last try at 63D's. Some solid 66's and a couple chance 67's. They all came back 65. I've been through a large number of both mints for the year and the strikes are not real solid. I also believe the graders are taking condition rarity into account at the final grading session.

My guess is it's going to take a 68 before we see a 1963 Lincoln in a PCGS MS67RD holder.

    Al,

Have you ried to resubmit you best coin? I was having a terrible time with 1930's lincolns getting 67's and many times got the bump on a resubmit. If you have a real GEM it may be worth the $15.

    Clackmas,

I think you answered your own question with your last - submit a couple of the very best and if required, resubmit! If you make one or two, you always have a buyer here image! I'd even consider taking the rolls off your hands for the opportunity to try.

I believe after looking at so many of the 62 - 63 cents, there was a serious problem in minting these in gem condition. What the problem was, I don't know, but aside from the one I got from Al, I can honestly say that I haven't seen any better in the MANY rolls that I've plundered through. I need the 62-D and 63-D to have a complete set MS66 or higher and I have looked long and hard. From what I've seen, I don't think PCGS has been overly hard on grading. Should they relax a little because of the problems with these years? Probably not, just keeps them the condition rarities that they really are. Good Luck! Dave

One of the things I have noticed with the 62's, 63', and the 63D's is that copius marks are present. However I believe many if not most of these marks are from the dies themselves. I see many pits and the same pits on multiple coins. I think the dies got rusted for these issues. Has any one else noticed that these dates have marks that were created from the actual striking?

Should die chatter degrade a coins grade? Die polish does not. I actually like die polish marks. I guess it should from a market prespective but not technically.
