Die grease in mint mark?

I was browsing a few circ walkers at LCS yesterday. One marked 1917-s looks like not a full mint mark; problem with the die.

How about "not an S"?
Why can't that just be a die gouge?
Could even be PMD.
Curved backwards for an S,methinks
My first thought was maybe die chip/gouge, but it looked pretty close to correct location for mint mark.
By perhaps PMD, you mean if somebody scraped off part of the mintmark?
Thanks... Not my coin, not my problem (not my monkey, not my circus), but always learning.
am
No,I was thinking impact damage.
smashed part of the mintmark flush with surface? Does that happen (intentionally or otherwise)?
No, sharp object penetrating surface.
I think this is an outie, not an inny.
You push in, the metal gets displaced out. Get a hammer and nail and have fun.
Plausible, I suppose. Maybe on a rainy day I'll experiment on a junk bent silver quarter.
What does the reverse look like?
Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value. Zero. Voltaire. Ebay coinbowlllc
no mint mark.
The coin is still in the LCS. I took a quick snap of the obverse, in order to see what the heck was up with the mint mark.
(camera is better than my eyes or a loupe, to my way of thinking)
