What was Bill Belichick really thinking?

doubledragondoubledragon Posts: 23,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

A photographer took a photo of Bill Belichick grabbing Mac Jones wrist and leading him off the field after the game yesterday, and now there's a story circulating online that Belichick wouldn't allow Jones to talk to the Saints players after the game. You guys know Belichick better than anyone, what do you think his thought process was on this, he's a very methodical thinker and can be difficult to figure out at times.

Mac Jones allegedly prevented by Bill Belichick from talking to Saints players

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones had a forgettable game on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. He threw three interceptions, including a pick-six, as the Patriots suffered a 28-13 loss to drop to 1-2.

After the game, Jones was seated on the bench, perhaps contemplating his subpar showing. Saints quarterback Jameis Winston walked over for the traditional postgame pleasantries. A few seconds later, Jones was heading over to the field to chat with other Saints players but his wrist was grabbed by Patriots coach Bill Belichick, preventing him from doing so.

While it wasn’t caught on camera, a series of photographs were captured by the Boston Sports Journal, which was reposted on the Pats Nation Instagram.

Jones, who played well in the Patriots’ first two assignments, struggled against the Saints, throwing 30-for-51 for 270 yards and just a lone touchdown. He didn’t offer excuses for his performance and acknowledged the need to improve.

“Obviously, no one likes to lose here, and the Patriots have done nothing but win for a long time. We’ve got to get back to that. It just happens through everyday grind, everyday work, and not focusing on the results. Play each play. Play each day one day at a time. If we can do that, then I think we’ll see progress, and we’ll just go from there.”

Their next game won’t be any easier as Mac Jones and the Patriots battle Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday.

By the way, I did not blow up those photos of Belichick grabbing Jones wrist, I believe Bedard did that, but I'm not sure.

I'm not going to lie, Bill Belichick fascinates me, he's very methodical and hard to figure out, of course most geniuses are, but he is probably the most fascinating coach I've ever seen.

He wanted Mac to wait until he meets a real NFL QB. He’ll let him talk to Josh Allen

Probably wanted to talk to him privately and fast before he lost his train of thought lol. Either way o felt bad for Mac yesterday, it didn’t look like he had any fun whatsoever. It won’t get any easier next week when Brady rolls into town pissed off at losing to the Rams.

I think Bill Just wanted to take Mac out for ice cream after the game. He got impatient and tried to "guide" him out...

In my opinion, Mac will be fine. I really like what I have seen out of him. Will the rest of the team be fine? TBD...

Mac looked pretty miserable after the game, but I like that because it shows you that he really cares about winning, I think you guys got a good one here.

that is a peculiar way to treat a grown man with all the national media watching, grabbing his wrist like he's a child. it doesn't take much "genius" to extrapolate this innocent act and get a snapshot of what's going on in the meeting rooms. losing is tough and especially so in the atmosphere of the NFL. apparently it might be doubly so in New England under BB. players need to get accustomed to losing and even familiar with the occasional beat-down because they are gonna happen.

winning is easy, losing can be impossible for some people to come to grips with, but it happens to us all.

I didn't see any footage of the KC loss to the Chargers, but I did see the loss to the Ravens. something weird happened at the end of the game. as the Ravens were coming up to the line for the final kneel down, almost the entire Chiefs defense was milling around. when the game ended a couple players actually ran off the field to the tunnel, a nice way to accept defeat. it reminded me of Charles White when he came to Cleveland and played his first game against the Steelers in Pittsburgh. as the Teams headed to the locker room at the half, several Steelers were trotting along with White and chirping in his ear. it wasn't received well and almost broke out into a fight.

Bill, let that young man out from under your skirt. he's tough, he'll be OK and better for it. :o

I agree that Mac will be fine. he has looked nothing short of professional so far.

compare him with some of the other 4 QBs drafted before him. Fields looked like a tire fire yesterday and Lawrence has been really bad thus far. I think his QB rating through 3 games is around 60. Wilson has been even worse than Lawrence thus far.

I realize it is a super small sample size, but when half a season has gone by if things havent changed, I wonder if there will be some second guessing happening.

sometimes the best athlete and the best arm during combine drills doesnt equate to the best player on the field.

just ask pick 199 from the 2000 draft...

compare him with some of the other 4 QBs drafted before him

compare the rest of their Teams and the rest of their Head Coaches to have a more accurate gauge. off the top of my head, look at Jones and Fields: the game-plan by the Bears seemed like its objective was to make Fields fail, the Patriots are going to great lengths to accomplish just the opposite, make Jones not fail. Lawrence and Wilson both play on bad, bad Teams.

at least the 49ers are doing it right, letting Lance sit, learn and prepare to be the QB of the future. really, what's the hurry??
