2002 National

One month away from the greatest show on earth! Are many of you going? What are your related goals/philosophies for your trip to Chicago? I will be there for 2 full days. I think I am going to buy bulk PSA at a percent of book if a dealer will allow it. IE - I may just go table to table offering to spend 5 grand if they will give me a set percentage off of SMR. I also may just buy raw and look to get them graded in hopes of higher value. I have a friend that is going to blow $25,000 on Football SP's from 98&99!!!! I am trying to talk sense into him, but he is so far gone and so rich that I'll just enjoy watching him do his thing.

Please share if you can your "goals" for that weekend. Thanks.

  • I'll be there to enjoy the festivities. My main goal will be to reward those dealers who helped me through the previous year. I usually try to pick-up some stagnant inventory to fill holes. In addition, I usually save a bunch of raw cards since the previous national and submit them at the next national.

Since I live about 30 minutes from the facility, I'll be there most of the days.

    Goals -
    * ungraded cards for the sets I collect for me to submit during the year. There are a few dealers who consistently have very high-quality cards available for me so I always visit them first.

I hear it is best to submit at the shows, but at $35 a pop, it gets kind of expensive. I assume you are submitting $500 + cards?

Uniship> When you submit at shows, you don't have to use the on-site grading level. When major shows come to Chicago, I'll sometimes hand in my normal "vintage bulk" 45-day turnaround submissions at the show because it saves me the money and hassle of mailing my submission to CA.

I see, but do they actually grade them there or do they bring them back to CA and treat them like regular submissions?

Cards submitted with on-site service are indeed graded on-site at the facility.
Cards submitted under the standard service levels are taken back to CA and are graded there - and shipped back when completed.
The "received in" date is not set until the cards arrive back at the CA facility, normally 2-3 days after the last day of the show.

I plan to look for cards that I need in 10 different sets that I'm working on. I look for ungraded as well as graded. It's also great to meet dealers and collectors from all over the country.
  • I usually use the economy service at shows and wait to receive them later (usually about 6 - 8 weeks).

I'll be doing just like Dude, except only with four sets not ten. If finding stuff for the four sets is too tough, there are several "special" cards I would enjoylooking for.

I am mulling over bringing my 1958 FB set, EX+ to NM+ overall, for possible sale, appraisal, or not bring it just keep it. A sale would be used to finance my much more meaningful collecting pursuits, at least in my odd point of view.

It might be nice to meet for drinks on friday nite or breakfast saturday morn or some informal gathering of forum members.

  • I was at the June show in Chicago (I too only live about an hour away and will at least go on Thursday or the day Ali is there) and they had a show special-still $10 a card for economy, BUT a 10 day turnaround. And they held to it. They wont announce this show's special until later, but Im looking forward to it.

To me the charm of the National is seeing all the middle age wearing their bad hair pieces. As I once mentioned in an earlier thread, if any of you go to the National, don't bring your Bad-Rug-Alert Detector. You'll overload the circuitry and wear out the batteries the first few minutes of the show. Don't get me wrong, I'm not against toupees. I'm just in amazement why some people wear BAD ones. image

  • Depending on how fast I drive, I'm usually at the show in about 30 mins. I'll be there at the National for a few days.

    Goals:

-spend lots of time at the casinos.
    -party.
    -entertain the ladies.
-give MW a great big hug!
  • Is PSA going to do anything for the board members that attend the show?

zardoz - how about special PSA t-shirts for members only?
What? Did you think I was going to suggest THREE FREE GRADINGS? image

Seriously, PSA t-shirts are a good advertising tool for them. Just about any company involved in the card business who doesn't already give out T-shirts should - unless your t-shirts would say "I'm GAI". image
