What will happen to the Baseball sector of the Sportscard Hobby If a strike were to occur???....

I wonder what would happen? Should it be played like the stock market, with several cards going down because the strike, people are no longer collecting baseball cards(newer ones, like new packs) and gobble them up while they arent selling during the strike? Or is that even a possibility? What do you all think?

  • I think that new packs will be harder to sell, along with newer singles. All the dislike will be pushed on the player because they are striking. I think people will start to finish old sets and stuff like that. I don't do much in new baseball, since in my area, baseball cards are sort of dead, but I think some people will stop collecting them alltogether.

I think the focus will again go back to older cards. I myself, think newer cards are WAY WAY over priced and the "bubble" will burst as soon as the strike starts!

The hobby needs to rethink what it is doing to itself with game-used cr@p. Game-used is now so easy to get it has driven the market down to nothing. The Market is so screwed up that people sell newer stuff at 50% of book and still have a hard time selling it? Beckett to me is an expensive roll of toilet paper, because that is about all it's good for. The Real Market is now on-line sites like e-bay etc, and the majority of newer cards sell for less than 50% of book.

Older nice condition cards are about the only thing that holds it's value. If and when the strike happens, the old will go on fire!

How can a Mark Prior #'d rookie card be twice the price of a Hall of Famers like Billy Williams or Dave Winfield? Yeah the kid has great potential but he has 2 wins in the majors and some his cards are worth more than players who are in the Hall of Fame and has long established careers.

The strike will actually bring people back to reality and make it harder to sell baseball packs for $5-$8 a pack.

Just my thoughts! Take them for what they are worth.
I collect Bobby Orr cards if you have anything interesting to offer ! Thanks
  • If there is a strike it will surely drive the casual fans that are buying cards during the season away from the hobby. That in itself will drive the values of cards downward, especially the newer cards.

Vintage cards will probably hold value without too much turmoil there. We don't worry too much about valuation as we collect to keep
& not for profit. Our Cal Ripken collection is priceless to us & a superstar like him is less likely to be affected by a strike anyway.

The other baseball we have of the players we like is also safe in our eyes as we will be keeping it for the memories.
The cards we have for trade is another matter. We are thinking of putting it up for auction on eBay as a "strike special lot" if there is a strike just to move it out & build up our $$ so we can get some more nice hockey or football boxes.
For all you investors out there;good luck! We think you are going to need alot of it as a strike is looking way more likely than not.Kind of ironic,in a way,as this time around they don't have a Cal Ripken kind of player to bring them back to the game. With all the bad press what with steriods clouding the home run isssue, not many fans will return because of that. With a majority of these players making huge salarys even at the base level, they are not going to get alot of sympathy from the fans & the owners sure aren't going to be winning alot of compassion either.
There is always hope;albeit a very slim hope that both sides will see the light & avoid what could be a disaster for this great sport!!

  • The new Baseball Card market would take a huge dive. The new card market is already out of control as it is with every brand of cards putting out 5+ products every year.

The Vintage market will stay solid as rock. Vintage cards have been the heaviest movers going up in price over the last 10 years. If you guys are in this for the money stop buying modern junk and invest in true rare vintage cards.

Ichiro had around 100 rookie cards last year. In 20 years do you think those cards will all be worth something??? I doubt it, the price guide will have a flat price: 01' Ichiro RC's $5.00 each.
Looking for former University of Arizona NBA RC's in PSA or BGS 9's/GEM MINT grades. Die hard University of Arizona and Bay Area Sports fan.
  • I don't think that cards will take a dive at all. I think a few will quit, but come back afterwards. Topps will still put out ten 2003 sets as will Upper Deck and Fleer. Honestly I don't think baseball drives baseball cards as much as value does. I mean which of you will invest in A.J. Pierzynski because he's having an all-star year or Jose Vidro because he is having an amazing season. Sure, you invest in Bonds and Mcgwire when they break home run records or Luis Castillo when he makes a run at the hit streak record. But, in my opinion I think I'd rather have Jose Vidro over Luis Castillo right now. All i'm saying is that A lot of collectors unlike me don't really care how good a player a guy is as long as his cards are worth money. They don't even care if the game of baseball is even played as long as cards are worth money and keep being sold. i think everyone knows that they can't just quit the hobby. It's too much fun to blow money on pieces of cardboard.
I'm looking for anything Yanks, any baseball autos, and much much more on my site. Thanks.

  • I think you have to collect for the joy of it and not look at it as an investment...back in the early 90's people bought cards thinking they could use the investment to put their kids through college and were disappointed to find they were lucky to get .50 on the dollar. It's exciting to pull a card from a pack that Beckett prices at 100.00 or more but if you're thinking investment then sell ASAP while the card is hot.
