Check out the weird new Buffalo weights...

I'm not sure who came up with these weights, but I suspect they were smoking dried, fermented bison dung. We are astonished to learn what we long thought were the keys to the series are no longer such ... A 26-S, for example, is weighted at more than the 13-S Ty. 2, 14-D, 21-S, etc. ... A third grader with an old Red book could have done better.

  • Yeah, some of them are a bit screwy. A 34-D doesn't warrant a '5' weighting. I dunno.

A 26-S, for example, is weighted at more than the 13-S Ty. 2, 14-D, 21-S, etc

Let's see, MS-65 prices for those coins:

    13-S T2 -- $3,800
    14-D -- $1,725
    21-S -- $7,400
    26-S -- $57,500

Am I looking the price guide wrong?

Mea culpa ... Pardon my brain fart. I was thinking about the weighting from the point of a non-registry Buff collector. I have a nice complete F-to-AU circ Buff set, but lack the bucks to go for a registry unc set, which is, of course, what we are addressing here. In lower grades, 26-S is cheaper and more common than the other coins I mentioned. But again, I was thinking from the standpoint of circs; the 26-S is a condition rarity in MS-65 or higher (9 coins) vs. the 13-S II (86), 14-D (126) and 21-S (53). That's what I get for thinking as a fill-the-holes collector as opposed to a registry contender.

My collection is only complete from 1925 to 1938, still working on finding low-grade examples with decent dates.

I'll buy PCGS MS65 1926-S Buffalos off of anyone all day long and twice on Sunday for $5,750 each. image

The price guide might be stretching it JUST A BIT with that price...but you can't buy nice MS64s of this date for $5,750.

Do not fall into the error of the artisan

while in fact he has had only one year of experience...
    twenty times.
  • And there are 9 of em in ms65! Last I recall, there was only one ms65rd 1926-s cent
and that has less value than the buffalo! image
