why?? the pictures are quite accurate and in the case of the first two, several times actual size. the Walker is almost three times actual size and the medal is larger than it's actual size of 64mm.

@keets the 2 cent and especially the medal are too dark to really judge from the photos. Without that Walker in hand with the toning its very tough from photo to guess. My eyes aren't what they used to be either.

this is potential POTD material!!! I'm due for an eye exam myself, absent that I just always like to have ample light for whatever I do. frankly, I haven't been to shows or shops for several years so it's not the imperative that it was 10 years ago when I was more active.
We can complain about the images, but (like it or not) this is the first impression we're likely to get when we go to buy something. With that in mind, it behooves us to hone this much needed skill. Grading from an image until you get the coin "in hand" is likely to not go away anytime soon...
2 Cent- MS64 (although the breaks in luster might be rub limiting it to AU58)

I'll defer on the medal... beautiful piece though...

OK, here are the grades:
Two Cent --- AU58.
Nickel --- PR65Cam.
Walker --- MS64.
Bronze Eglit 37 --- SP62.
the Two Cent piece is a nice looking coin for the assigned grade, especially since there's no dirt or verdigris in the lettering. they can be hard to find like that. for me, brown coins are hard to assess for luster unless they're really glossy. this coin is absent luster on the design high points, primarily the arrow tips, the very top of the ribbon and the top of the feathers on the wreath.
not much to say about the Nickel, everyone seemed to nail that grade. it has really clear mirrors and the frost is more than adequate for the Cameo designation on a date that is pretty rare as such.
I really like the Walker although it would have been better if it had been rescued from the album it was in about a decade earlier. understandably, some members don't like tone or tone where it's progressed this far but it fits nicely in the set I'm trying to build. it also demonstrates the balancing act that graders exhibit when it comes to strike vs. contact marks. this coin is quite free of contact marks but suffers from a less than sharp strike for a Philly issue. I know some won't understand, but if it had a tiny, little "S" on the reverse it would probably grade two points higher. go figure, right??
I guess I understand the reluctance of so many to attempt to grade Exonumia they aren't familiar with, but I have come to understand that it's similar to grading coins, strike/luster/contact marks/overall eye appeal. this medal is really difficult to find in Bronzed Copper while it seems common in White Metal. I have seen only one listed at auction since I purchased this one raw on eBay 1-2 years ago. when I submitted it I had expected MS64 and the assigned grade surprised me: there are virtually no post strike contact marks, the medal is well struck and overall looks very glossy.
thanks to everyone for participating, I'll post one more today if I don't get side-tracked.
