Gold Escudos - need some education

I think it would be fun to add an 18th century Spanish colonial gold piece to my collection.

I'm thinking an 8 Escudos coin, maybe ~AU58. Looking for a type coin, nothing especially rare or specific. Basically just the nicest cheapest one I can get. B)

I have done some pretty cursory searching but havent really dug in. Any specialists here? Can anyone recommend any resources, dealers, tips?

Appreciate any help. And because pictures are worth 1000 words, this is approximately what I'm looking for (image from google):

I would suggest one from Mexico or South America they keep their value and will probably increase over time. If you truly want one from Spain go for it. Heritage and Ebay would be places to look.

There are a few on Ebay. I would buy either graded by NGC or PCGS and buy a numerical graded one versus authentic they are not rare enough to be desperate. Sure there are some very rare ones but they would be expensive and rarely come up for sale.

You are better off with one from the colonial period. Like the one you posted. I would try and get one from the 1700's.

Then why don't you help him. I have been following the market for almost a year daily that is better than nothing (and have collected coins for 25+ years but newer to these coins). By all means be his guide. He wants any nice coin in his budget how hard is that to offer help on no need for a master level.

He is not building an 8 escudos collection he wants 1 single coin.

Spent the last 12 months reading 18 books daily and analyzing market sales I think I can answer this little question. I told him to stay away from authentic coins since most here shun them like the plague. Some of us are happy with them this is a hobby it is not all about making money sometimes it is just fun owning a rare coin in any grade.

Please let me know when you OK me offering any input on this open forum. Did not realize we need 20 years of experience for this type of rookie question. And yes I am well aware you know much more than I do but it feels good to try and help with such newbie questions.

The coin you posted looks original.
So you know that much .

Find a nice common date that is graded AU 58 , original skin and buy it

Thanks for the tips and info. Definitely looking for 1700s (18th century) and was certainly thinking Mexico, Chile, Colombia, Peru (Spanish colonies).

A common date with original skin graded AU58 is the target for sure.
