2021 Donruss Football, a "base" product, opened up at close to $500/box.

I would buy a half a case every year to rip and build sets. Looks like those days are over. I guess I could fight thru the crowds to buy many of the worthless retail configurations out there. 2020 opened up at around $300 and I buckled and bought 4 boxes of cards that were worth about $150 total, terrible ROI anyway you look at it.
Maybe this is a sign that I need to grow up and stop collecting rookie cards of players half my age.

Saw some of this ripped on YouTube. Not impressed with the results.
Kiss me twice.....let's party.
Donruss Football is not supposed to be impressive. It is a base product. If you don't hit one of the top rookie autos, you will most likely get a bunch of singles that are only good for set/insert set making. This product is now the same price as the high end products issued in 2019 with the same content. I don't know if Fanatics will be any more benevolent to the hobby but if Panini is out of the modern FB game all together, I will not miss them.
I find your scenario to be accurate for anything modern the last couple of years. I keep waiting to hit a major auto or limited production rookie card to off set all of the money I have wasted over the years but alas it never happens.
I find the above even more prominent in Baseball since there are so many more players. I guess if I ever lose power I have a ton of worthless Topps Heritage cards to add to the fireplace. Heritage is especially frustrating for me since so many of the cards aren't even close to being centered. Uffdah had a better chance of his Jim Brown rookie being centered!
Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.
