$612 for a Payton RC that’s off center?

Watched this auction last night. Actually bid up to a point where it seemed like there would be zero return. Would a card like this come back higher than a 7, which seems like a stretch? Would think it would be a 6, at most. Could easily buy a 6 or even 7 for that price already graded. Good for whoever consigned it and also Greg Morris I guess.

Gregg Morris Listings always go for higher than if listed by someone else. Just like pwcc listings.

  • Agree to that. Just wondering if these are all flippers and what that card could realistically grade out at? Am I missing something? Wouldn’t it make more sense to buy a guaranteed 7 for a couple bucks more?

I hear ya... The greg morris pics are never that high res, so it would be hard to tell, but it could be an 8, though with the cut on the back, would be more like a 7.5... But even if it could be an 8, you are going to gamble another $200 to hopefully gain $300 or so. And if you get back a 7, you are down 200 bucks.

I was watching that auction as well. I didn't bid because I have a similar looking Payton RC that is already graded as a 7. My best guess is that some people thought it had a shot at an 8 but as the previous poster mentioned, that doesn't seem like a good gamble at that price.

Believe it or not, not everyone grades every card. Very possible it ends up in a binder or a CS1

I agree with the comment above about not everyone looking at this through the graded card lens. I've found that part of the reason why people pay up for Greg Morris cards is that it saves them the risk of buying a graded card and cracking it out. Either way, for those buyers the end result is an ungraded card in a binder, not a card to submit to grade. I'm sure there are flippers out there looking to buy cards to grade, but Greg Morris has such a following it's hard to find "bargains" in their auctions.

Not everybody wants to have their cards graded, maybe they just want a nice NM card for their collection. If they do want it graded, they can always wait to send it in when it is fiscally responsible. We don't all fit in the same basket and as the song from Diff'rent Strokes goes: "What might be right for you, may not be right for some."

I personally don’t like slabs, so I agree. But, if I get hit by a train tomorrow, I’d like for my family to be able to liquidate my assets as quickly as possible.

They definitely have a following, that’s for sure. And yeah, it’s pretty impossible to find a bargain, even of commons. They are pretty accurate in their assessments most of the time though.

Yeah, just seems like an impossible 8 with the centering.

The scans aren’t the best res, but better than a lot of other dealers of raw cards.

I know that some old school collectors value corners higher than centering. I know i did back in the old days.
