How to decide whether to send in coins for reconsideration

I know folks have had some success in sending PCGS-graded coins back to PCGS for reconsideration, getting higher grades in the process for some of their coins. I have several high-grade Mexican Cap and Rays 8 reales and pesos, all 65 or 66, They were graded originally in the December 2005 to April 2009; most of them in 2007. I am thinking about sending them in for reconsideration, as the big run-up in the prices for these coins makes me believe that even one grade increase for one coin would make the whole expense worth it.

Is the time frame when these coins were first graded such to make this effort worthwhile? In other words, how far back should one go with previous grading to have some hope that regrading might work. Obviously, a coin graded in late 2020 isn't likely to get an upgrade. But how about 2010 or, as in my case, 2005-09?

Any thoughts from the group?

Thanks!

I think the most successful players of the reconsideration game are people that have fairly good grading skills that are able to look at volumes of graded coins. I think the odds that any single coin, graded in the years you mentioned, is undergraded is fairly low. If you have a sample 20 coins and resubmit them all, you may not get a single upgrade. You may get 2 or 3 pluses though. On these super high end coins, the plus can also be worth the grading fee.

If you selected these coins specifically for quality and eye appeal, then you don't have a random sampling of coins. You would have nicer coins and the odds may be good that the graders will look favorably upon them.

I'd be curious to hear what the Cap and Rays collectors think. PCGS and NGC have seen a lot more Mexican coins in the years since you submitted. They may be more consistent in their grades now than then, on that particular series.

I would first look at the dates and whether those coins are real quality for the grade. You might want to compare your coins to the same dates... to the extent that you can find them in a prior auction- Heritage, Goldberg's and Stacks might be reasonable places to start. Reads as if you have some nice examples... rarity and condition rarity are two separate issues. I would be reluctant to resubmit them without doing a reasonable search to at least appreciate the coins you have in contrast to others graded at or near the same levels. Good luck with whatever you decide

The people who are successful at this are expert graders themselves and also know the grading standards the TPG is using at the present time. If you are not in that category then it is probably best not to play the game. Just thinking they "might" make it is not good enough.

Thanks to all for the useful comments.

It doesn't sound like the previous grading of these coins is "old" enough to justify any real hope for an upgrade. I am going to pull them out in the next few days and see what conclusions I draw. But I suspect you guys are right that I'd be wasting my $$$...

I think you should do this based on coins you think have a shot to upgrade.

I’m thinking the same thing and I will do this on the inspection of coins I already own and believe have a real shot at upgrading . Worth doing so to me .

I know this isn't Dark Side but it's relevant here. The last AU58 I need for my Barber Half set was the 1897-O. I tried 3 times through reconsideration to try to get my 55 to upgrade. No go and I was confident it was as nice as any of my other 58's. Finally I did a regrade and whala...got my 58!
