Bad news for the little guys.

The NFL significantly enhanced the rule against blocks below the waist this off-season, and Vikings cornerback Patrick Peterson thinks it’s going to make life miserable for cornerbacks on running plays.

The new rule means that if an offensive lineman is attempting to block a defensive back, the defensive back can’t initiate contact below the waist. Given that offensive linemen are often 100 or more pounds heavier than defensive backs, Peterson says the only safe way to go at them is to hit them low, and that’s no longer an option.

“We’re really gonna get smashed now,” Peterson told Peter King in Football Morning in America. “Imagine a 315-pound guard lead-blocking and running right at us. We gotta literally just almost stand there and take it, or try to fake them out and get around them to the ballcarrier. But I think a few of us [cornerbacks] are going to get leveled.”

Hope your team has some extra DB's.

Why is Patrick Peterson mad ? He is a defensive player. He shouldn't be hitting linemen below the waist. He should avoid them to make tackles.

maybe this will force players to learn how to tackle instead of roll-block. guys like Derrick Henry and Rob Gronkowski should really benefit and I suddenly feel even more confident about the Brown's prospects. Nick Chubb is already a load, trying to tackle him just got harder and his lead blocking Offensive Line is smiling in the film room.

it's about time all players got the protection given to a QB. next up: ejections for leading with the helmet. :)

I think he was pretty clear about why he is upset. It's bad enough to have to tackle a running back who outweighs you by 20 pounds, but to try to contend with guys that outweigh you by 120 sounds like a disaster.

I think teams like the Vikings could have a HUGE benefit here with a very good RB and several athletic offensive lineman. The running game overall could really make a comeback.

It does seem that there could be a lot of injuries to defensive backs though. If one player gets hurt trying to protect another, I am not sure that is an improvement. Seems a bit unfair to make rules to protect big guys from little guys!

Yes they are. I am a little tired of so much passing, a little more running the ball will be nice. Hope your team has some big corners/safeties and a couple of extra back ups though.

ABSOLUTELY! Especially if they lead with the helmet and hit the ballcarrier in the head. This rule has been enforced very poorly so far.

I think it is a good rule. I have always hated roll blocking. the potential for a severe lower leg injury is too high. If Peterson is too afraid to take a block maybe he should start working on his kicking game.

maybe he could take over for the backup QB and become the team holder for FG and XP attempts.

He is pretty fast. Perhaps he could be the one who runs out to retrieve the kicking tee after kick offs.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Can you imagine Hog Hannah if he didnt have to worry about roll blocking. He was an animal as it was.

I don't see this as much of a solution, having an injured DB is not really any different than having an injured Guard, plus, as I said, the Guard has 100 or more pounds on the DB. Most knee injuries are from hits to the side, not the front.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the running game this year.

    More 3-4 defenses?

The NFL looks to cut down on injuries.
    Ok I’ll buy that.
The NFL wants big plays, higher scores and highlight reels.
    I believe that more.
The NFL wants running backs more involved in the scoring.
    I’m getting convinced
The NFL wants running backs to score higher in fantasy.
    That’s a stretch.
