Advice on Fugios, please...

One coin I have always wanted but pre-33 gold always gets in the way.
So, I finally started to dig in and look real hard at these coins. Lots of corroded ones out there, lots of damaged planchets, lots of smooths, but they all have one thing in common...they all sell for way over posted value.
So, my question is, how do I price these? I know someone will inevitably cite supply and demand as a price driver, but it's not like there aren't any around.
I have never done colonials before and I just need some simple advice.
Thanks!
Bob

What different grades have you been looking at?

I don't know if I can answer your question, but particularly with early copper, surfaces, color, and originality will dictate price. You might first decide what is your quality standard and then determine your comfort level with the price of admission (and one can check the usual sources of auction history to help be one's guide).
I got mine from CRO and chose it due to it's even strike, smooth planchet, even color, and overall eye appeal. While I knew I'd pay a premium buying from John, I was okay because this one hit all right buttons for me. AU50
While the CRO premium doesn’t make sense for lots of common coins, classics like your hand picked over dozens of shows and without any “yah buts” is the smartest money one can pay. That is just about perfect for a cir copper

I have been looking at F - VF, STATES UNITED, pointed rays.

@Catbert
See, that's exactly what I'm looking for. Maybe not an AU, but I would certainly like to see all the devices, legends, etc.
Edited to add:
Although, I might sell a coin from my collection to be able to reach yours.

Check the PCGS Coin Fact web site as a starting point. It lists all the major varieties and includes history of this series, pics of each variety, population information, and pricing for each grade.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
Thanks. When you say they all sell for way over “posted value”, what source(s) are you using for values and are you checking out various dealer sites and auction results from different companies?

Checking the interwebs for dealer sites, PCGS, NGC, HA, GC, EBay, etc. looking at prices realized. I bid on one auction at high retail and couldn’t see the over bidders for dust. I got absolutely smoked.
I just want a reasonable one at a reasonable price.

Think about how much detail you want to see, is a full M.Y.B. legend important? Do you want a planchet without defects?
This one is my favorite because of the die clashing, it's in a problem free holder but certainly isn't perfect.
Nice coin @kaz

Above average. Really nice.
The prices you see are the current "reasonable price".
I don't fully understand the question. This seems more like a complaint that they are too expensive although you phrased it as a question of determining the value.
Perhaps I didn’t quite think this one through…🙄
I guess that what I’m asking really is a question no one else can answer but me; how much over all the reference prices am I willing to pay to get what I want. How’s that. Thanks for helping me understand my question 😆
Now, it’s off to the hunt!

I think during the time they circulated, they wouldn't let you have any unless you dragged them home over cobblestones.
Or was that Chain Cents?
Look for smooth noncorroded surfaces. Bid on one that is R5 or less rarity. You could call John Agre at Coin Rarities online, he could easily help you find a reasonable, high quality, lower grade coin.
A word of advice…when you do find one that makes you happy, buy it!
Yeah, I'm not going to make THAT mistake again. Saw one that was just right at a major dealer on line. Price was $350 over the PCGS listed price. I hesitated for one hour, went back and it was gone.

They are plagued by poor planchet quality and poor strikes, even on the high grade examples. It is really tough to find really nice examples that are "all there". It's the main reason I haven't bought one yet. I mean, I've had some low grade ones in inventory. I might still have a couple laying around. But I haven't found that one that needs to be "more than inventory".
