Corrosion for one but I have not checked the NGC or PCGS websites for their actual definition.

Here is a coin I recently had graded which is noted as corroded. The pillar side detail is really good and so is the strike. Very little wear. Crown side more.

I also have another coin which is labeled "stained". It's an AU and actually nice. It has a dark uniform color.

The first I bought because I cannot find another one even close. I was hoping NGC could conserve it but they did not. Probably recover my purchase on the first one or close to it. Second, no time soon though I didn't spend much on either.

Hey when they are very rare you buy what you can you may never get another shot at them.

Yonaka's reference doesn't show the 1769 as being very rare. It's just almost impossible to buy. His survey identified 11 which has it in the middle for the series, tied for 10th with the 1768. I think it's pretty close.

Mintage is reported as 225K, so it's likely not absolutely rare. I'd guess maybe as many as several hundred remain but whether it's somewhat more doesn't make any practical difference. The survey also shows 19% (for the denomination) holed and the vast majority aren't in a very collectible condition. The Gilboy plate coin is quite nice.
