Need To Rant
Hey everyone,
Just need to get this off my chest to make myself feel better. Money has been tight lately, so I slowed my collecting down to focus more on completing raw master sets. I've been putting together variation lists, comparing them to what I currently have in my sets and I'm trying to acquire the cards I need, mostly from ebay. Although most cards have been within the $1-$10 range, I can't tell you how many times I get the card and it doesn't contain the variation that the auction's picture shows. I know a lot of sellers use stock photos, but it is just happening way too often. I end up sending an email to the seller and I'm refunded, but it's just aggravating. I spend so much time looking at all the listings, examining the photos and then waiting to bid at auction's end. Then I have to wait for the card to be shipped only to realize it is not the pictured card once received. Most replies by sellers are, "sorry, this is the only card I have" or "I was not aware of a variation." This is understandable as some of these variations are very minor and not listed in most books. The sellers do the right thing 100% of the time and rectify the issue, but I want the card. On the seller's side, I can understand not scanning every card they have, especially if the card is only listed for $2 or something, as it's not worth their time. They just scan one and list. I do applaud that they do the right thing by me, but the excitement I get when I see the card and buy it it is short lived when I receive the nonvariation version. I just feel if you're going to list something for sale, picture the exact item.
Thanks for taking time out of your evening to read this, I feel better already.

photo should be of exact item for sale.
Stock photos suck.
I agree. That’s deceptive advertising what those sellers are doing. I would be peeved too.
This is why sellers should never sell reprints, raw cards on a white background and a host of more bs. Tired of this crap!
Have you tried "contact seller" before you buy the card and let him or know exactly what you are looking for, or if the card pictured is the card being sold?
I never use stock photos. always detailed scans of the exact card for sale. as a seller and a buyer, I think using stock photos would be pure laziness.

You should try shopping on COMC, they photo all cards in their inventory. No stock. Have you looked there?

What I can't stand is a small mention in a long description that is not in the title that is important
I bought a few cards lately and the one that pisses me off the most is a 2014 Topps update that had green on the psa case
flip and no mention that it wasn't the green variation in title. Way down in the 1000 word description it does say its not the green version. The difference is pop 2 vs pop 200
IMO this is a very sleeky thing to do.

Yes their listing are accurate and exactly what cgcmgr is seeking.
cgcmgr if you order now you (or your heirs) may even get the cards sometime in the late 2030's or early 2040's?

Yep, I started doing this as a result.
Yes, I check them out all the time and they are always spot on. If the card has the variation, that's the card I get.
Yep, I agree. Then if you complain, they say it's right there in front of you. You just need to read.
When you say "master sets" do you mean the old 50s/60s sets trying to collect all the different variations or (like I do) the 90s sets where you try to get all the insert sets as well as the regular set?

I should have been more clear. I'm trying to complete the sets I currently have with all the variations. So it's not really master sets as I do not have all the inserts for each set. However if an insert did have a variation, I try to get it.
I do have many insert sets from the 90s as I tried to collect them as much as I could when I first was putting the set together. Haven't really added to those in a long time, they mostly came from local cards shops around my area back in the day that have since closed shop.
I just have to revisit this. I was looking for some variations this morning and came across one I needed. I clicked on the Buy it Now button and received a message saying the seller is not taking bids from you, or something like that. I look at the seller's name and it is the same seller who I had had issues with prior. In both auctions the seller posted the variation or error, but sent the corrected card. I find out funny how he/she has pictures up of all the variations/errors of a card, but doesn't ship card shown. Then I get blocked for paying for something advertised and not not receiving it? Maybe I'm the only one who caught him at his game. Regardless, I moved on and purchased it elsewhere.
