an interesting boxing story -- i know double d won't object!
mind you, Michael Spinks was not a chump. going into his title fight against Mike Tyson, he was 31-0 and had never been knocked down in his pro career. but as the story goes, "Jinx" was so scared that he wouldn't leave his dressing room to face Iron Mike.
funny, after reading this article i think back to what i remember (i watched the fight). i vividly recall Spinks having a look of unease on his face prior to the bout. i went back and watched again after i read this article, and sure enough he did not have the countenance of a guy exuding confidence. moreover, Spinks stared directly at the ground and refused to look at Tyson when the referee was giving them instructions. i would not at all be surprised if he had been thinking to himself, "what is about to happen to me?"

Yes, this is a fascinating story, Michael Spinks was a phenomenal boxer, like you said going into that fight he was unbeaten, a great ring technician. As a matter of fact, it was Michael Spinks who handed the great Larry Holmes his first professional loss. Hold that thought, I have to go to Wal-Mart real quick.
be very vigilant while visiting Wally World this morning

I'm very disappointed in Wal-Mart, they didn't have my Mr. Cookie Bar M&M ice cream sandwich, very disappointed! Ok, anyway where were we? Ah yes, Michael Spinks was a phenomenal ring technicician and he was the first one to defeat the great Larry Holmes. Now, Larry Holmes in his prime was one of the all time greats, and going into the fight against Spinks, Larry Holmes had been heavyweight champion for 7 years had a record of 48-0. As a matter of fact, that night against Spinks, Holmes was looking to make history by tying the 49-0 mark of Rocky Marciano. As you can see on this Holmes vs Spinks poster, Holmes was trying to make history against Spinks. I love this poster with Rocky Marciano's image looming in the background.
Anyway, Spinks handed Holmes that loss, and beat Holmes again in a rematch, so that just shows you that Michael Spinks was no joke, he was a master in the ring and he had a punch called the "Jinx" and I believe it was an overhand right, and if he caught you with it, you were in trouble. Anyway, going into the Spinks vs Tyson fight, I clearly remember Michael Spinks being totally intimidated by Tyson, you could see the fear in his eyes before the fight started, he was scared. At that point, Mike Tyson was unbeatable, indestructible, a terminator who just obliterated anyone in his path, and Michael Spinks knew that. He was scared and of course Tyson destroyed him, but that was the only loss Spinks ever had, and I don't think people realize how great Spinks truly was. I don't hold that loss against Spinks, I'm not sure anyone could have beaten Tyson that night. Except maybe, maybe, Buster Douglas.
