Beginner Questions - Evaluating Raw Card for PSA Submission - Kobe/Jordan
I've recently become interested in graded cards. To start, I pulled out the cards which I collected in the early 90s. Recently, I've read up on grading (including on PSA's site) to try and evaluate whether any cards I held are worth an eventual submission.
I was hoping the members here could provide input on whether the following 2 raw cards I pulled from my collection. If they were submitted, roughly what grade could I expect? I appreciate an actual grade is subject to expert judgment but I wanted to benchmark the groups opinion against my own. I'd like to use these examples to calibrate my own sense of a raw card's condition/grade.
I've attached pictures of a Kobe rookie & a Jordan Insert. The Kobe to me looks to be worthy of grading while the Jordan seems to have issues on the edge/corner. I'd imagine these would preclude it from getting a high grade.
Appreciate any thoughts & appreciate your patience!

Welcome to the board! Your Kobe has a good shot for a 9. Never assume a 10 with today's grading, but yours is a really sharp card. Here is mine to compare. The Jordan is a 7, or maybe an 8 with that rough edge. Black borders are really tough grades.
Thanks, appreciate the reply, it's helpful for my understanding.
The Jordan card is not worth grading, the Bryant is a maybe.
Not sure if you are thinking of selling or just want the card(s) for yourself.
If you were to grade the Bryant card now, you would pay over $200.00 to get it graded. If you were to sell it on ebay and got $400.00 for it ebay would take roughly 20% and you would get a "profit" on the card of about $100.00 or so.
If you get an 8 it's a loss.
On the Kobe, the picure isn't the clearest, but looks like there may be some issues with the protective coating on the right edge. Might need to remove the coating if it doesn't look perfect. Probably a better bet to send the card to SGC for $30 to start.
I just want the card for myself. It'd be nice to have one that I pulled graded and in a slab after all these years! Realistically, I'd wait to see if the current backlog clears & more economical grading options are offered again before considering a submission.
My instinct is to leave the coating, since that's the way it was manufactured. Is there a general preference with collectors when it comes to with coating or without coating?
Prices are better with the coating, and I personally would leave it on.
I'd just grade the Kobe. Looks solid.
Assuming you want the card in a PSA holder someday, why would you waste $30 sending it to SGC first?
I've sent them in with the coating on, however if there is a problem with the coating, then it is considered part of the card and will affect the grade. LIke I said, I'm seeing some air bubble like things on the right edge, like it is coming off, barely.
