Mac Jones explodes onto the scene

doubledragondoubledragon Posts: 23,269 ✭✭✭✭✭

The whole football world is raving about Mac Jones, it looks like you guys might have found your man up there in New England.

Mac Jones made a bold impression in Patriots debut

New England Patriots rookie quarterback Mac Jones drew rave reviews after his preseason debut against the Washington Football Team.

When Mac Jones fell to the Patriots at No. 15 in the 2021 NFL Draft, it looked like a match made in heaven. Then the wait to see him in action began.

Finally, New England fans got to see their rookie take the field in Foxborough and they couldn't have been more enthusiastic about his debut.

Sporting the No. 10 jersey, Jones took the field to a standing ovation from the Patriots faithful.

The hype opened with a first career pass and completion for a first down.

And it only increased from there.

Jones stood in against pressure and still threw darts.

Even his incompletions were highlights

Basically, the football world agreed that Jones doesn't stink. Far from it, in fact. The former Alabama passer might actually be pretty good.

Jones finished with 87 yards on 13-of-20 passing across five series against the Washington Football Team. He'll have to wait for his first touchdown pass after leading two field goal drives.

Mac Jones exceeded expectations in his Patriots debut but let's not overreact
Before everyone gets ahead of themselves, Old Takes Exposed did a public service by compiling tweets about another Patriots quarterback's preseason debut.

Ryan Mallett completed one pass as a Patriot. In total, he started eight games in his career for the Texans and Ravens with a 3-5 record. He completed 55.1 percent of his passes and threw 10 interceptions to nine touchdowns.

That's not to say Jones will have the same fate. It's just important to remember that the preseason isn't everything.

Jones has a long way to go before he wins the Patriots' starting job and sees real action during the regular season.

The next Tom Brady? The kid's only going to get better over time, he's not like that draft bust up there in New York.

Preseason is preseason. Obviously I’m happy to see him look good but not too long ago one Jarret Stidham looked great too. Regular season is reality so let’s see

4 yards per attempt and he burst on the scene? I watched ever pass play again after the game and there was zero separation for wide outs and the few times there were he took the check down. Let’s wait at least until Saturday before awarding him 7 rings.

Just look at this dart Jones threw, there's no doubt about it, the kid's got it. I just wish the Panthers would have grabbed him in the first round, I'm very angry at the Panthers right now, just who the heck is in charge of this garbage down here in Carolina, it's pathetic, what kind of Mickey Mouse operation are they running? I'm becoming more and more bitter at the Panthers.

And Colin Cowherd was even impressed by Jones and we all know how hard it is to impress that grumpy old man, here is his Twitter post about Jones's performance with a picture of Colin Cowherd watching the game with his feet kicked up on a table.

Initial reaction. @MacJones_10 sets his feet nicely. More anticipatory than Cam. Pats run & screen game have been strong. Solid opening drive. Didn’t see any nerves.

It was only one preseason game so you can’t really take too much from it, good or bad.
As for the Jones/Mallett comparison from that article, the only actual comparison they had was both ended up drafted by NE. Where one was drafted with the team’s future in mind, the other was Bill’s way of paying cheap money at the backup QB position while hoping that the kid might develop enough where he could be flipped for something of value, a la Matt Cassel. They were also two totally different type of passers, Jones is actually considered a legit prospect while Mallet was a big arm and not much else.

No, that's Colin Cowherd, he posted that picture with his tweet. It's strange to see him do that, it freaks me out every time I look at it!

I just can't believe we selected a cornerback in the draft, everyone knows you need a good quarterback and we go out and get Sam freakin Darnold. Who the heck is making the decisions down here? I'm so mad I can't see straight!

Can't be,there's no family photo with Joe Louis. ;)

If I had to make a guess:
Top shelf looks like a Michael Jordan Upper Deck card, I'm thinking maybe UD Hardcourt
Bottom shelf card on right looks very much like a Bowmans Best Mirror image insert. I thought Jordan on the left but the colors don't match up to what would be Ron Mercer on right.
Bottom shelf card on left looks like Steve Young wearing #8 but that image looks like a right handed throwing QB.

Anyone else got any guesses there?

On top Its close but not the MJ I was thinking of. (If it is MJ)

Bottom right card might actually be Adonal Foyle on left/Shaq upside down on right

Actually that bottom shelf card on left might be Colin Kaepernick.

Double D there is no logical reason why the Panthers didn’t take Fields or Jones but I’m glad they didn’t! 😂

I've had it with them, boneheads! I hope they don't make the playoffs this year, I really do, I want them to suffer!

The last time I got excited about an NFL preseason performance was Ken Dorsey back in 2004. That didn't go too well.

  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

The first roster cuts on Aug. 17 trim each Team from 90 to 85. The second, on Aug. 24, drops the roster size to 80. The final roster cuts on Aug. 31 take the team to the typical 53-man roster for Week 1. that means that 37 players from this weekend won't be on the Team plus any others that are let go to make room for any new signings.

understanding that should temper any initial enthusiasm for any Rookies anywhere. also, quite a bit of what gets seen now is situational and "packages" to see how players are in groups.

I will say this, though, it's really nice to see the NFL playing again. this off-season was interesting.

Because the Panthers know Darnold was wasted in a dumpster fire at the Jets. You don’t need to start all over with rookies when you have a veteran with 50 starts. Fields will be another Winston and Mac Jones maybe another Cassel. Name all the Alabama QB’s in the HOF? SB winner? All Pro? People said the Patriots were a system for QB’s. Alabama is the blue print.

People said the Patriots were a system for QB’s.

I don't get this at all. in the Team's entire history they really haven't had great QB's until Bledsoe and Brady. Bledsoe wasn't developed and to my thinking neither was Tom Brady, he was more of a sleeper, nobody saw his talent and he ended up in the "perfect storm" when Bledsoe was injured.

to me, that "system" comment alludes to Belichick. however, I think he will be hard pressed to find the success he had prior to Brady heading south. the NFL is so very competitive that when a Team slips it may take years to recover. what has happened to the Patriots is two-fold: Tom Brady left along with several others as the Team got old, the rest of the AFC caught them while several Teams left them in the rearview mirror.

Bill Belichick might have five years left, perhaps not enough time for the Patriots to recover. they have already joined half the NFL in the annual "starting QB search" merry-go-round. the way things now stand, Belichick probably needs at least six years to catch Don Shula. he could do it four or it could take him 10. what will be interesting is how he reacts in his early 70's if the Patriots struggle through several sub-.500 seasons. that new territory, never been explored during the past 20 seasons.
