What happened that made soccer so popular? I understand that once the sport is popular the cards go along, but when did Soccer have this major uptick and what caused it?

Soccer cards were always significantly undervalued relative to the sport's global popularity. They increased in sales value very very slowly but steadily over the past 15 years or so, but with a noticeably underpriced top end. Then there was what I call a large initial price correction about 2.5 years ago, and then another much larger rise in late March 2020. It has been a lot less flux in the graph since then, with a relatively more gradual increase (with some decreases) since then. There are a few different factors that caused it. One of them is probably that enough people finally realized way too late that athletes like Pele and Messi should be priced as high as any other sport's elite, and the rest of the items followed suit.
Interesting…but seems to me like soccer cards have taken the lead over hockey…I supposed worldwide soccer is the more predominant sport so that makes sense, i was just surprised to see how many people are in the soccer space.
Soccer cards have always been popular with Soccer fans who are also collectors. Soccer card value was always strong much like basketball as the people that collected were willing to spend. The difference in the market now is you have the investors heavily involved now. In addition, the breakers and more importantly the Instagram people are heavily into it now as it gives them something new and exciting to push.
Personally, I think soccer will continue to grow. Many of the people collecting soccer know nothing about the sport currently. Once they start to follow the sport they will go from investor to collector.
Interesting…i just wonder if some of those influencers picked up soccer check and decided to have some “fun”
*picked up soccer cheap
The 2020 pandemic card surge led to rediscovering my old MLS soccer memorabilia from the inaugural 1996 MLS season -- signed jerseys, team signed ball, posters, tickets, and a complete collection of those first season cards. Nice to see how broad the card universe (soccer, tv shows, pokemon, golf) has become. Should get even hotter with the FIFA World Cup coming to the US in a few years!
