1853 Half dime is it F-105?

Namvet69Namvet69 Posts: 9,068 ✭✭✭✭✭

Found this nice 1853 half dime w/ arrows in a cigar box of old buttons at the flea market today. Got it for $1, an acetone dip later, I want to know which die variety it is. Not an easy task but Gerry Fortins website is great although up to this point the only half dimes I have are those I've dug detecting. Arrows and date position are important, its got some clashes. I say F-105 but I'm pretty sure this is why I'm here, to learn from others. Images are attached. Peace Roy

Well there's my first mistake, it's a half dime not one dime. Gotta stay focused.

I can sympathize, as I have often mistaken dimes for half dimes on ebay (under the half dimes category).
Although at this point I can usually tell the difference from the head shape without having to look for ONE on the reverse.

And you get points from me to attempt attributing an 1853 dime using Jerry's website,
as there are so many different varieties.

Attributing an 1853 half dime is also usually very difficult, because there were so many dies,
and the new attribution guide is not ready yet.
I can tell you that your half dime has the pointed flag 5 and the date on the hub.
This does not narrow it down by much, as more than half the obverses are of that type.
We will probably have to use clash patterns to further categorize them, which will be tough.

@yosclimber thanks for your input. So between the obv clash at the right hand and the rev clash above the bow ribbon and behind the M, does your reference guide reflect those markers? There's nothing in the CPG.

I agree those are the primary clash locations on your coin.
Sometimes you can also see clash marks in the fields on either side of the head,
and as a wavy line on the reverse under STATES OF.
I haven't tried to completely categorize the clash locations on the 1853 dies yet - it's a pretty big
challenge because there are so many.
Possibly half of 1853s have clashing of some kind.
I did use clash marks in the 1871 guide to categorize dies (really die states),
as an exercise to see how hard it might be.
It will be quite a bit harder to do it for 1853, but I will try it eventually.

I agree, grateful to have rescued it from an old button vendor. Peace Roy
