I collect Dodger autographs, so every player becomes a need once they join the team and make an appearance. It is surprising how many unknown players are tricky to find. i understand the fact that players with short and uneventful careers are less popular, but with all the IP autograph seekers at spring training and games, TTM requests and just set building in general, I don't see anyone as being out of the realm of finding unless the player themselves just flat out doesn't cooperate. Still, lesser known players can make for some of the toughest adds.
The stories behind why certain players and/or certain collectibles are hard or impossible to find fascinate me. non signing is not all that fascinating, but why a player won't sign a certain card, images with a certain team and things like that are funny/interesting.
I spoke with a guy a couple of years ago who collects Reds players in a similar manner. He told me that the handful he still needed were relatively short career types like that. One guy in particular (whose name I did not recognize and don't remember) sounded a bit like Tommy McDonald (he seemed to think the whole idea was blasphemous or something to that effect.)
I thought it wouldn’t bother me not having the checklist signed, but looking at the 99.24% complete set did get to me. It wasn’t the highest grade, but i got the checklist back from PSA with a Magic auto along with a few other upgrades and now have my set at 100%! I am now considering this set completely (probably ).

Great set congrats!!! Are you also doing the 1987 Fleer stickers signed? I see a nice Magic Johnson and a few others up on Ebay.
I have thought about it, but most of the fun for me in this set was getting the autographed of the non-HOF players. I have thought about doing a HOF basketball set, but the moderns guy’s autos are crazy expensive (but o so tempting…)

Why Johnson on the checklist?
I'm guessing because he was the 1987 NBA MVP?
Somebody had the 1986 Fleer Set signed, and the checklist was auto'd by David Stern.

This is it - i figured this represented the set as well as any other player.
I actually mailed a checklist to Mr Stern when I started this set. He sent me back a 1990 Skybox and a 1991 UD checklist back signed. I figured he got the cards mixed up, and somewhere in the card world there is someone who has these sets signed without these checklists.

This is awesome. I haven’t worked on them in years and years, but I am two autos away from the 87T football set and probably at 2/3 of the way thru the 89H basketball set. Totally agree that the lesser known players can be the hardest to track down, but also the most rewarding.

If someone here needs a Jordan there is one up for auction over at Heritage auctions:
Estimate: 8000$+
They also have a 1986 Fleer auto over at HA:
Estimate: 40 000$+

The story is not as fun without pics!
Wow, awesome project. Congratulations on finishing the 87 set. The David Stern autos are cool too.
