Mike Trout's prime years have been lost

with the news of no timetable for trouts return, it seems his prime years have been lost. because of mostly injury and also covid, trout has not played a full season since 2016, his age 24/25 season. the closest he has come was 2018 when he missed 22 games. He is now 30. it is very rare for a player to get more durable in his 30's.
there is also talk that when he does return, either this year or next, it will be as a corner outfielder. i think we have seen trouts best. there will probably be spurts in the next couple of seasons where he will play up to his standards, but unless he drops a fair amount of weight, I see him missing lots of games due to injury for the rest of his career.

sold my few trout cards (only had etopps) during covid. zero regrets and always thought he was overhyped to begin with. great player, no doubt. but never the goat a ton of folks tried to make him out to be w the creation of the war statistic.
i agree. i never bought into the hype. WAR really did blow up the hype on trout. he is really good at taking walks and played a premium defensive position (not well, i might add)
with the move to corner outfield and the injury problems the last 5 years, those big WAR totals will not be so big anymore.
George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.
His last two years have been a disaster, but he did get 600PA in both 2018 and 2019. I would call them "full years".
At best he'll have 5-7 years if he can stay healthy and if he wants to play. OMG the guy makes 37 million a year until 2030!?!?!?!?!?!?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
6 times he's been over 400 in total bases plus walks.
Have you seen his SLG? 9 times in the top 4, .583 lifetime is fantastic!
I hear he strikes out a lot looking.
I am not a card guy, but threads like this make me curious. So i have to ask...... Has there been a decline in his prices or a sell-off due to what is discussed above?
This puppy just changed hands for a cool $1.05 million, it's the 2011 Topps Update Platinum 1/1, PWCC brokered the deal, and the buyers are DJ Skee, Courtney Reum, and Carter Reum who is Paris Hilton's fiancee.
Any card collector knows investing in Current players is a risk. Even Mahomes as high as his ceiling is he is one play from the end of his career. Steven Strasburg comes to mind. I remember the astronomical prices (seem low now) for his cards. I know little about Trout cards because I learned my lessons early with baseball rookies. I haven’t learned
my lesson yet with football rookies.
"I spent 50% of my money on alcohol, women, and gambling. The other half I wasted.
.........
But was that below or above what was to be expected?
A kid at work just spent $1200 on a Trout rookie, he thinks he will make money on it next year when he comes back. I’m pretty sure it was a rookie, not sure which one though
Good question, I'm not really sure. 😁
So are mine. It happens to everyone.
Trout won't be a 3,000 hit guy, stolen base king, 40/40, Batting average king. I never understood the hype for him or Bryce Harper
Just wait until you get one or two Rice cards and the hobby bugs bites! You may not be able to make same statement after that!
Yes, this explains why Mickey Mantle cards are so cheap now that all the hype has died down.
I agree with the OP; losing these years may well prevent Trout from reaching the career heights he seemed destined to reach. But, absent the recent misfortunes, those heights were downright Himalayan. Even with them, they may still be. I don't know what to say to anyone who doesn't understand "the hype". Unless you are old like me, Mike Trout is the best baseball player you have ever seen. I'm not sure what level of "hype" you expect such a player to get.
