I just saw that famed ZZTop bassist Dusty Hill has died and I weep.
I saw the band five times during a brief two-year period in the early 1970's including a chance concert at Cleveland's Allen Theatre. That one was a front row affair, up close and personal, Billy Gibbons ripped off a nice riff and stretched out to me during "Jesus Just Left Chicago" and Dusty Hill stepped over to pluck coming out of the solos. I saw them again in the late 1980's at Blossom Music Center when they were too well known to really do the soaring blues solos, too much focus on the hits from their extensive song-book.
Early on, for about 3-4 albums, those guys really owned the American Blues. It is sad to see these Giants of Rock-n-Roll fade away.

Agree. They were the longest current tenured rock band with the same 3 members since 1969. 50 plus years
RIP Dusty
Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
"As Old As The Hills and Twice as Dusty."........ you gotta' have Dust Bowl parents to get it that one........I did, my mom. I'm sure he did too. ROCK ON! R.I.P.
I love ZZ Top, lots of great memories listening to them growing up. RIP.
three-man power rock blues, and they did it so well. I remember the first time I saw them, SRO at Cleveland Public Hall about 20 feet from the stage center. we had gone to see "Uriah Heep" and the opener was some funk band we didn't know called "Earth, Wind and Fire" led by the enigmatic Maurice White. next up were these three guys in cowboy hats: the guy playing guitar stepped up and said simply "We're a little ol' band from Texas" and they just took off!!! somewhere in the middle of the set they played "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" and they owned the crowd. I think that was their first National Tour.
apparently the band plans to play on with their guitar tech taking Dusty's place. that's a pretty fine tribute.
Master of Sparks.....RIP

RIP. I agree with all of the above. Great stuff. Maybe put some music in this thread.

Here it is again. Don't think my last attempt to post this was successful.
I hope it's not the one that Paula Abdul choreographed. Velcro Fly. That made me stop watching them for 10 years. Had to wash my eyes out everyday for an entire year

I'm not sure. It's their 80's hit "Legs" from around 1983.
Legs is fine as most of their stuff. Great guys. It was Velcro Fly I was speaking of. Watch at your own risk my friend

some of the best ZZTop was simple blues, what they played early on, Dusty Hill and Frank Beard layin' down a tight rhythm for Billy Gibbons to soar over top of in his wonderful style. the power trios of the past seem simple but the style was unforgiving, mistakes could be easily seen and heard. not many have done it better.
