I think we're missing a much bigger point here. The future may not be so much in Frankenstein sets of coins in slabs as it is in consecutively numbered sets of Legos. Both have admirable stacking qualities. :* In a post-apocalyptic world where rainbow Roosies no longer rule, the more versatile and better engineered Legos might at least be useful in constructing shelter.

The goal is "consecutively numbered holders" in order to prove the coins are "a true set". Where does having identical grades come into it?

Where does the OP state the goal is proving the coins are "a true set?"

I'm reading- Why is "consecutively numbered" a selling point?

He doesn't. I thought that was the implication.

Exactly. What does having identical grades have to do with that?

And guarding it, too. Ever step on one of those things barefoot?

Never really heard of this on coins and could care less. More of a banknote term.

If dealer x submits 100 coins holder no consecutive. So what? Beyond that can’t c what big deal is. Now if the holder had a special pedigree label…..

I do have a 100 note bundle consecutive SN Zambia Gem CU banknotes bought $28 from bullion dealer at show decades ago. CV on them now $20 each. So $2000 CV on all, cost $28.

Have you never heard of a matched set?

Of coins? Sure. You don't need matching grades on the labels to have one.

If you're collecting coins and not labels, that is.

As the Romans used to say: non sequitur.

And they do use the term with coins.

Let's not call them "Frankenstein" sets any more. :p
Perhaps rather describe this sequencing as "suggestive of a possible P.T. Barnum provenance" o:)

'P.T. Barnum provenance'? Wouldn't that apply to 99+% of the collector coins on the market?

Is that pithy, or simply pissy? :#
Either way, or any other, brilliantly enigmatic.

I would have appreciated the observation even more if I had been credited for the quotation. I thought it downright wizardly epigrammatic in its conciseness.

I bought a 1939 proof set in 1970 that was undoubtedly original. I had it slabbed in 2003, with consecutive numbered holders. I imagine there are many "put-together" sets that have been submitted to PCGS. Personally, I don't think the set is worth more than the sum of its parts.

I guess one could ask why do people collect consecutively numbered coins as well. If you have a 1900 why go for the 1899 or 1901?

Sorry, had to do it. I didn't see anyone else post that.

CJ fecit. A sly pun :p Resonates with the etymological note on "cacophony" and the influences of pre-Hellenic Greek upon Latinate noun roots

I hope I can discriminate between what you produce and the ambient cacophony of this forum. I looked up the etymology of this word. It really stinks.
