Can you identify this auction catalog?
Just got this pic from Regulated. Pretty sure the catalog is Heritage 1984-86, but I’d like to pin down the exact date.

do you think we can at least somewhat presume that the gentleman with the catalog with a blue cover, yellow stripe and perhaps 2 coins is for the auction in question as people usually have the catalog of the auction they are attending.
OR
do you think this is one of those situations where the auction catalog is showing the people/person that are the consignors and then any publications they are holding are probably not helpful at all and instead we need to try to identify the people/person and track the whole thing that way?
did a few facial recog scans via google and turned up nada.
perhaps try to do a manual search of the top auctions ie platinum night etc and/or specific big collections sold during that time. don't recall how far back heritage archives go for such a thing. probably too early but worth a check.

"Google Print has scanned and indexed a large number of numismatic titles. -A large number of recent Heritage auction catalogs are available. It's good to see Google scanning auction catalogs, and I look forward the eventual appearance of older auction catalogs.

HA featured archived collections, expanded. WAY down bottom left. LONG list.
I know who the people are. (I’ll let you guess for a while.) Just trying to figure out when it was.

Is the person with the blue catalog Dr. Donald Kagin?
I know who the people are too, especially that sophisticated gentleman in the black shirt, but not sure of the auction either.
My hair was that black too, back then !
Andy, I looked through Heritage catalogs from that time period and checked with a couple of cataloguers here. Zeke did some research and determined that the pictured catalog is from the Kagin's 1986 ANA sale.
Mark Feld* of Heritage Auctions*Unless otherwise noted, my posts here represent my personal opinions.
Is that Eric Streiner? Were you working for him that week?
.
ty. i was leaning toward kagin's but didn't pursue it any further based on the statement of it being a heritage cat. gotta follow those instincts.
Awesome, thanks!!!

AFAIK, Regulated still works at Kagin's, so that would add up.
Yep! Then me, Dr. Kagin and Jay Cline.

SLQ dealer Cline on right.
Okay... the tie breaker question... and for bragging rights... What is the on Kagin's lapel pin?

Kagin for ANA President
Didn't recognize Jay without his top hat!
Let's see some of your new purchases...from 35 years ago.
Was there anything you can recall that you got in that auction?
A quick look at the catalog and prices realized reminds me that Proof 3 cent nickels, Shield 5c , Liberty 5c, Walking Liberty Halves, commemoratives along with other Proof type and generics ruled the earth in those raw days and often brought multiples of current prices.

The Proof Barber quarter and Dime look amazing.
@WinLoseWin
1) Skip to statement #3
2) I bought the proof-68 Barber and AU '96 quarters for about the same amount, then sold the Barber piece more quickly.
3) I made up statement #2
4) Values were so out-of-whack statement #2 may have happened anyway.
I took a quick look and can't say I remember buying anything in particular. Cool sale though.

My memory of that show was no hot water at the Hyatt because of the flooding.
... and every vending machine in downtown out of order due to being clogged by quarters counterstamped with a "Vote For" slogan from a candidate for an ANA office.
I gave a quick look for the catalog and didn't locate it. I'm pretty sure that I was at the sale and a buyer. If I can locate it, I'll post information about my purchases.
I didn't know Mr Cline and didn't collect SLQs. But I recognize Andy and Eric, although I haven't seem either in decades, so this is still how they appear, in my mind. And Don's appearance hasn't changed much over the years. I miss his dad. What a shmoozer.
I remember @ColonelJessup as looking somewhat like attorney Mark Geragos but much more funny, a better vocabulary and sharper. His point about experience bears repeating. There simply is no substitute for experience. One CAN'T look at large quantities of coins and NOT learn from it. And @CaptHenway, @MrEureka, @ColonelJessup, myself and others here have each been at it for over 50 years.
