How to spot legit shrink wrap sealed 89 Upper Deck factory sets?

MParker79MParker79 Posts: 28 ✭✭

I have a couple of the sticker tab sealed sets, but was looking to buy a couple of the cellophane/shrink wrapped versions. Can’t figure out what’s legit, and what isn’t. What are the things to look for? Is this set linked below legit? Is it even possible to know for sure if it’s shrink wrap from 1989?

I haven't handled any '89 Upper Deck factory sets but I see a few positive signs.

Like just about every factory-issued cellophane product, there should be a [ seal point. Meaning, the way these products were sealed was by being fed down a line into the cellophane and then a [ shaped sealer would come down and seal the cellophane so that you have a seal line from one end, around the corner and down the length of one of the sides, and then around the corner and across the other end side. This set has exactly that.

I also think the natural bunching of cellophane at both ends is a good sign. I have many sets that have exactly that type of "extra" cellophane bunched up on both ends. If it were me, I would feel comfortable buying it knowing that once I get it in-hand I would be able to inspect it better and return it if something looked wrong.

I also think the fact that the seller provides images of every side is a good sign, as well. Almost all of the resealers from that era that I've seen on eBay usually provide you with two images, at most, so you can't see their handy work.

There was a thread last year about it, try searching.

It’s tough to be 100% sure on these, but look for a relatively loose wrap. If the wrap is super tight, pass on it. You’ll also find ones with both a sticker and shrink wrap. This is a red flag as they didn’t come that way from the factory. It’s possible they’re legit, as some dealers did this to unopened sets, but I pass on them.

Is sounds stupid, but if you’re looking to open them, don’t shy away from ones that have some light tears in the seams, as long as they aren’t big enough to have allowed the set to be removed. The legit wrap is pretty fragile and prone to tears on seams.

Looks legit to me, just checked my 2 of 3 that has been sitting in my closet since 1989. End seam in the middle, long seam snaking along one side matches the ones that I have. I opened one of the three when we bought them. Looked at the sellers
stack on the ends, they all look legit to me. GL with your hunt. cheers.
