It's amazing how many great cards from the 1960's you can pick up..

in a PSA 6 that sell for under $500. Mantle 1967 - 1969. Clemente 1961 - 1973, AAron and Mays the same. Rose is even cheaper. ANd people pay thousands for someone I've never heard of. The chances of the new guys coming close to these dudes is 0.

Work hard and you will succeed!!

363 wins, PSA 5 Warren Spahn 48 Bowman!

Incredible buy when you consider that a Wagner T-God will set you back at least 5 times more.

    How about this guy:

From 1921 through 1925, Hornsby arguably put together the greatest 5 year stretch of anyone in MLB.

Batted .400 three out of those 5 seasons, .397, .401, .384 (an "off year" for him, .424, and .403, a cumulative 5 consecutive year average of OVER .402,

Averaged over 31 homers per year over those 5 years, hitting the same "dead ball" that Ruth hit in that period. And on base pct. of well over 1.0, with slugging well over .700.

And you can buy non-Goudey 1920s, playing years, PSA graded issues for well under $500 in grades of 1-6.

So spot on here. With all the new hobby money being a couple generations removed from that golden era, I truly believe there are fewer motivated buyers for 60s non-rookie stars in 7/8/9. Heck there are a TON of 6s out there that look like 8s to me too that you can get for next to nothing.

If the grade doesn’t bother you and you are just buying cards for the eye appeal you cannot go wrong finding PSA 5’s with an almost undetectable surface wrinkle. Someone submitted a centered sharp corner card and missed this flaw. Bad for the subber, great for you.

363 wins, PSA 5 Warren Spahn 48 Bowman!

Incredible buy when you consider that a Wagner T-God will set you back at least 5 times more.

As my late grandpa liked to say, Spahn and (Johnny) Sain and pray for rain! As a matter of fact, this more specifically is from the 1948 Boston Braves, who grandpa's favorite team the Indians (he had won a $10 bet with his fellow employees on who would win the AL pennant that year; the others bet on the Red Sox, Yankees, Tigers) had to beat to win what is still their last world championship. Sadly he didn't get to live to see them win another one but boy in 1997 they came so, so, so close!

In 1984, when the rookie card and special issue modern card craze was beginning, a Donruss Mattingly, Gooden update, or Clemens update would cost about the same amount as a high grade 48B Spahn! In fact, you could buy Spahn's entire career in Bowman and Topps cards for about the same cost as those 3 rookie cards!

Perfect reasonable type collection to assemble. Too bad the newbies who complain the hobby is too expensive to get in to don't see this.

I'm not so sure about that...Donnie Baseball and his iconic 1984 Donruss RC is still a fan favorite among the hobby is it not? Honestly I'm surprised we even get any newbies (especially young people) at all...

I didn’t think you could get a 5 if it has a wrinkle.

Wanted to clarify, I was referring to the Spahns/Palmers from the posts above.
The Mattingly RC will continue to be in demand. Only imagine what would happen if he was ever elected to the HOF.

That’s normally the overlooked or missed flaw that produces the dreaded PSA 5. There are some beautiful cards out there in 5. They are the perfect crack outs for an album.

Fairly certain surface wrinkles cap at a PSA 4, at least according to their grading standards. Maybe an occasional wrinkle slipped thru to a 5 holder but I don’t think that’s the norm. Please correct me if I’m wrong.
