I have a ball signed by Munson in 1972 and his signature doesn't look much like that sig. I'm not an expert but I watched Munson sign mine.

I thought is seemed like a 'not a chance it's real' thing. Not that I was looking to buy it (I don't buy autographs) but for grins, I messaged the seller and got this:

**"After a two game series between the New Yankees at the Oakland Athletics, with both teams have a day off on August 17, 1978, the A’s planned a Tenth Anniversary Party. The gathering was by invitation with players from both teams showing up. With former A’s players like Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Ken Holtzman and Paul Lindblad now with the Yankees, it was also a reunion. Reggie, Catfish and Lindblad had come over from Kansas City so they were special guests of honor.

The afternoon event was held at the Oakland Civic Auditorium. The players from the Yankees would be flying out right after the event so they came over on the team buses. It was a great lunch spread with local celebrities, civic leaders, politicians and media people joining. Though it is normally inappropriate for media people to ask for autographs, I felt it was ok because of my position and since the Yankees had won the World Series the previous year.

I had several Lee MacPhail balls with me so I collected a few autographs. Of those, I got Thurman Munson to sign one of the balls. It is always interesting that when players have time to sign, their signatures are so much better rather than the quick signs at the park. I sold the ball away from Ebay and it sold for $4500. Thurman took the time to talk for a few minutes and we discussed our mutual love for flying. While Thurman and I were finishing our talk, one of my assistant brought me this card to have Munson sign for me. I could tell that I may over asked so he signed the card, we shook hands and he went over to another group.

Less than a year later, flying would take his life. I have cherished this card ever since. I have just been diagnosed with a rare cancer so I am liquidating everything I have. I am considering reasonable offers for all of my items here. thanks"**

If that was the story, one would put that in the ad, not just "All sales are final with no returns or refunds". One would also get a legit card authenticated to increase the probability and price of sale.

I wonder how long it took him to come up with that piece of fiction

Very entertaining piece of fiction. I felt like I was almost at the luncheon while reading it. This guy should be an author. FAKE!

Fake. Nice effort on the “T” in Thurman but he went downhill fast from there. It’s too graceful for a Thurm auto, especially the Munson part.

While not eBay's intention, the new eBay return policy on cards is truly an asset for con-sellers. They do not allow for any opportunity to have an item like this one authenticated.

With the new rule the proliferation sublimation of fake autographs and altered cards is well underway. The only safe move is to AVOID raw card sales on eBay.

We're Sharples like that common in 1978? That looks like it was penned....oh about 2020 during the pandemic!

May the Lord bless you is my prayer

The longer the story, the bigger the fib.
That’s the fakest auto I’ve ever seen.
I had a tony Gwynn auto pulled for “fake signature” on eBay, and It’s obviously legit, but it’s a-holes like this that ruin the hobby

I checked out their other items and that seller is hoping to get $100 each for common 90s/00s era scrubs, like Scott Servais, Cliff Floyd, etc. I guess if there is a once in a lifetime fool that will pay those prices, good for that seller.

The Munson looks nothing like any signature I have ever seen and if it was not rushed, then even more evidence to consider this to be fake.

I know Sharpies were around then, but when did they become a popular item for signatures? it seems a lot of that vintage signatures were ball point or fine point ink pens. I was not actively collecting autographs in that time frame, but those I have seen offered that were signed then (before things really seemed to take off in the 80s) are mostly NOT sharpie.

I collect Steve Garvey, Dodgers and signed cards. Collector since 1978.

I do agree that the story i very entertaining. I like the part where the seller and Thurman discussed their mutual love of flying!

Oh dang. My bad. I just looked at the auction again and it's a "Turman Munson" auto so in that case it's legit as can be. Bid away.

Zero point zero. In fact, it has about as much chance of having been signed by Thurman Munson (with an h) as you do, of throwing a piano and hitting the moon with it. :)

Here's the seller's other high ticket, non-authenticated autographs, near and at the top of this sorted search.

IMO, they're about as authentic as the "Turman Munson". Be interesting to read Mr. Zipper's critique of them, if hopefully, he's a member here.

There is more of a chance that I signed that Thurman Munson card than Thurman Munson.

In a way I feel slighted. Disappointed and cheated. I was eagerly paging down, fully expecting to find the fable that goes with this Munson forgery, and sadly, there's no story to be found.

The forgeries are often humorous in and of themselves, but the stories that go with them typically raises the entertainment value of it to higher levels.
