What Causes Bad Scans/Pictures

I've noticed over the last few months that Probstein auctions for the 1980 Topps Bird/Johnson RC show the card with partial/full missing perforation lines. At first I thought it was just one card. But then I saw another, and then another. It's not all the time, but I'm wondering what are they doing to take those pictures/scans that would cause the perforation lines to disappear?
They have a few listed right now with the same issue.
Here is an example of the missing perforation lines (I think the lines are there, just not showing in the pictures)

They could have a dust or scratch removal setting turned on, which typically will soften the image. It almost looks like some of the perforations are there toward the edges. It is Probstein, so if you have questions on the card, best just to stay far away.

Agree, they are probably "doctoring" the images with some sort of noise reduction filter, like when you scan in a creased photo and make the crease disappear. Very fitting that Probstein would be the one to have pics like this. At least there are back pics in those listings.
i have seen scans where a card is graded “8.5” but the scanning settings/software will make it look like an “8 5”.

I don't know, they look fine to me.
I agree. you can see where the perforations begin, but whatever tool they are using softened it and removed the perforations. probably a dust removal tool. their scans are never top notch, no where near as good as PWCC (if that says much). I purchased a card from Prrobstein that had bumper damage that didn't show in their scans but I was able to see upon delivery. however, overall, I have no complaints from the cards I bought from them In the past.
they also dont use the best scanner available that they should be using for their auctions. so, operator error applies here.

The quality or potential of your scanner to produce clear, highly resolved images is meaningless if you scan at the lowest dpi setting. This image looks to me to be scanned at about 72 dpi, not the typical 200, 300, or 600 that most sellers scan at when they actually WANT to give perspective buyers the best possible view of the item they're offering.
As noted, the rez is too weak to even show the perfs. An image like this is only useful to see the centering and get a general idea of the corners, fine details are obscured in the weak resolution.
You are right and you are wrong.... The image is 72 dpi, however, the size of the image is over 13x17 inches. So it's actually a 290+ dpi image at 3.25x4.25. The situation with this pic is strictly an image "enhancement" issue..... And a lack of giving a Sh*t
You are right and you are wrong.
While it may appear that he lacks giving a Sht, my belief is that he does give a Sht. Which is why it appears that he lacks giving a Sh*t, the poor quality of the image the deliberate byproduct of intent rather than carelessness.
