What to do with this card damaged by an SGC slab?

Bought this 89 UD Griffey off eBay because it looked beautifully under graded, and I still think it could be a 10 in a 9 holder, or at least WAS, but now with the edge damage from the SGC inner black frame, it’s probably a 7, at best. I feel like cracking it out, just to prevent further damage, and because it’s no longer a Mint 9. I’ve always thought these inner black plastic pieces looked suspect, and now it’s confirmed. Such a shame, it’s a great looking copy. Anybody know of SGC have improved their inner frame cutting? Seen a lot of SGC slabs on eBay, and I cringe thinking what they could be doing to the card…

Unbelievable! You would think they'd of tested this out. Never owned a Scg card ... Never will now.
^ My thoughts exactly. I couldn't believe it. I’m just glad this wasn’t something like a pristine 10 Griffey I’d personally pulled from a pack, got back from SGC, only to find the card to be degraded from the device that’s supposed to be protecting it! PSA all the way from here on out. BGS is fine, I just don’t like the clarity of the card that’s lost from the thick slab, and an oddly cloudy inner sleeve.
Thinking I’ll crack it out, and get it into a PSA holder, at whatever grade the card is now that the SGC holder damaged it. Anybody have an idea what I could expect grade wise? Ultimately it’s not important bought the card because to my eye, it’s the perfect example centering and color wise, so I’m going to hold onto it even if it’s just a 7, or even a 5 now.
Just another reason I only buy PSA

ive owned a few cards that were damaged by the PSA slab bumpers too. they aren't/werent impervious to this type of damage, especially for think card stock cards.

Seems like the easy solution is to not have hard 90 degree corners on the bumpers. But what do I know, I’m just a guy.
I've had cards shipped that are loose in their holders that don't show any types of damage. What kind of handling causes edge wear like that? It seems like it would need to have daily movement or some short episode of violent shaking to cause that...
This happened to me too and I'm wondering if they would offer any compensation under their old "Guarantee" policy. The "Guarantee" might only apply for cards graded before SGC removed their Guarantee around the time all the "card doctor" stuff was happening back in 2019.
I would think that cards that have a diamond cut would be more susceptible to this kind of damage.
The problem with the SGC Holders is that inner black "gasket" -- the diamond corner cutouts sometimes have a small "chad" hanging down towards the card border and when the card edge hits that small "chad" it can damage the edge of the card. That's what happened to my card, and it looks like what happened to the OP's card pictured above.
Long time ago ... We tested throwing around a common in a psa holder. It did damage inside. Tested it dropping, throwing on the table , like you would maybe your wallet after work. Did that about 20 times just to see. Damaged top inner corner, bottom. Can happen. Those were the older holders.
Even the jostling from driving would damage cards after awhile. I've always called it case rot. Sad to see. I hope PSA develops an inner sleeve that works to eliminate this issue entirely.
At this point, it would be great if they just didn't damage cards during grading and holdering to begin with.
Exactly! I've admired bgs in this regard. But to me..... it's an ugly case
If my life were on the line and I had to keep a card in the exact current condition it's in, I'd want it in a BGS/BVG case inside an inner sleeve.

The cuts on the gaskets are too jagged and sometimes they are tight on the card and cut right into the card. I have a Mantle card damaged that I bought several years ago. Life goes on.
Case rot is a good name for what happened to it. BGS cases certainly seem to protect cards best, but all that plastic just brings the clarity, and enjoyment of looking at the card down for me.
Life goes on indeed. Cracked it out. For me, looks great raw in a CS1.
