Is there a reliable way to differentiate between white metal and aluminum

when a classic token (prior to 1899) is encased in a prong holder?

    I would think a handheld XRF unit would work.

    I'm not positive but I believe that aluminum from the Hall process shouldn't have many impurities. White metal can be a mix of a lot of metals, but seeing a lot of tin and zinc would be the giveaway.

    The easiest way to tell is to check what is stated on the slab label. ;)

    Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

    How big is the token? There may be a substantial weight difference.
