Amateur question--What does the AV stand for on the label of this ancient coin?

The label reads:

Sulia, d. 79 BC Roman Imperatorial AV Aureus

    I figured it out. It means the coin is gold.

    AV (classic spelling of AU) = gold
    AR = silver
    AE = bronze, copper

    It is the traditional abbreviation for gold, used by numismatists since the dawn of numismatics during the Renaissance. The three abbreviations given by pruebas above are all from the Latin names of those metals: aurum (spelled "AVRVM" in ancient Latin), argentum and aes.

    Note that these abbreviations differ from the modern chemical symbols for these metallic elements (Au, Ag and Cu, respectively), though these symbols are also Latin-derived.

    Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.
