arguably the most bizarre play i've ever seen in baseball

can't believe no one brought this up

and please keep in mind there were 2 outs

if the 1st baseman for the Pirates ever takes the Wonderlic he might spit out a negative score

The first baseman looked over and saw the lead runner coming from third base, and hesitated and took way too long getting the ball to the catcher.

He violated a cardinal rule taught in Little League in a situation such as this...always go for the lead runner for the out.

Lots of bad baseball by the Pirates. First the 1B should have just running at Baez until he left the baseline. Second where the heck was the 2B? On the outfield view the RF was coming in to cover first, but it should have been the 2B.

I was wondering why he chased him, all he had to do was touch 1st base and the runner is out and the inning over.

he was probably wondering if his teammate -- the first baseman -- was born a bonafide idiot.

there were two outs. any time there is a force out at any base for out number three, any runner who crosses the plate prior to that out is not credited with a run. therefore, the guy heading home from 3rd was completely irrelevant. all the 1B had to do was turn around and do the centipede all the way to the bag, then touch it.

    So great.

Just step on first base for goodness sakes. The lead runner is meaningless.

I've watched this at least 20 times

Watching this play made me feel better about my Little League career.

This was quite bizarre, when Jim Marshall recovered a fumble and ran it back the wrong direction and scored a safety.

I remember watching this one back in 2015, Miami pulls off a wild miracle for the win.

This one was crazy, the 2013 Iron Bowl, with one second on the clock Alabama goes for the game winner and misses it, the rest is sports history.

Galaxy- Thanks I had not seen that! Hilarious.
My Dad always said mental mistakes are what hurts your team the most in baseball
and that is a prime example.

Yes there was lots of bad baseball, but it was all by the 1B and nobody else. He did that all himself.
I counted 3 mental mistakes he made on that one play.

    1. He shouldn't have been running Baez towards home plate.
(but since for some bizarre reason he was, he makes his second mental mistake)
    2. He shouldn't have concerned himself with the runner trying to score.
(but since for some bizarre reason he did, he goes for the hat trick)
    3. His slow functioning brain tells him to throw the ball to the catcher way too late.

And to top it off, a physical mistake. Throwing the ball high to the catcher from 1 foot away
when the runner is sliding into home.
