Tell me it ain't so!
I've also seen a couple of these now that look like they've been varnished, or Shellacked?
Starting bid $600.00

In the post above I mentioned seeing these that looked to have been varnished (coated) here is one like I'm talking about. I can't say its a fake or counterfeit, buts its odd.
Wonder what effect this has on the value of the coin?

    Apparently, and added "S"?
The shellacking of coins- copper- was a form of preservation 'back-in-the-day. I suppose it is easily removed and doesn't have any long-lasting effects.

i'd say probably added mm vs counterfeit? that vdb is obviously not correct. i haven't checked the position on that coin vs my mm alignment comp. but with that vdb, there really isn't much need either. good catch

Both are problem coins, well the first one is counterfeit... GSC has made a business of selling problem coins without disclosure, there's a reason their raw coin images can't be zoomed in but the slabbed ones can.
They do have some gems mixed in on occasion but you really have to wade through some crap to find them.

    Collector, occasional seller

Does anybody report them when they post a fake/counterfeit like this?
Others seem to agree that's it not a genuine 09S-VDB.
It would seem to me that ebay should pull the listing.
Its for sure the seller has sold enough coins to know this one isn't a real 09S-VDB.

    $1025 and 6 days left

Perhaps a direct message to gsc would have them terminate the listing

I bought a raw 1936 Wisconsin that graded MS64 once, but the reward isn't worth the work or potential failure, just as you mentioned.

I believe a couple of Buffalo nickels came back as Gem PROOF examples. Now, that's a cherry-pick!

That mintmark on the GSC coin doesn’t look right.

Well, the V.D.B is the philly mint, so that shoots the coin down right there.
Here is something else to look at on the coin. Notice the difference in the bends of the lower legs of the E's in United States Of America. (also look at the cross bar in the A's in America, the real one has a slight upwards slant to it, the fake/counterfeit one is level)
    Here is the GSC example!

    Now here is another 09S-VDB

Even if not altered, the coin is so common I have never understood why anyone would compete for an example like this one The surfaces are unattractive and it's easy enough to find a better one any day of the week in this price range.

I have seen some serious gems come out of them but one must wade though a bunch of muck. Lots of detail coins cracked and listed with some shilling possible. That said they take returns and do thousands of sales, some of it is on buyers.

You are correct. I love it when these less than honest people get cherrypicked. One of our board members nailed 'em.
