Galaxy- Are you okay Dude?

DarinDarin Posts: 6,247 ✭✭✭✭✭

I know it was an exciting day in golf because even I stopped mowing for awhile to watch Phil
at the top of the leaderboard at the PGA.
He kind of lost momentum when he was -10 and missed a birdie putt to go to -11 and a six shot lead.
Fell back after that but did a great job hanging in there and still has a one shot lead over Koepka.

Surely you have some thoughts about the tourney Galaxy, what's up?

Come on guys, Phil is great, but we all know what the real electrifying story was of this year's tournament. Yes, I'm talking about John Daly being in the lead for a split second, two days ago. Yes, there's no doubt about it, John Daly has won this major, sentimentally.

John Daly has just majored, sentimentally.

I'm just a little concerned about Galaxy.
A 50 year old Phil Mickelson is at the top of the leaderboard after Saturday at the PGA championship
and not a peep out of him. And to top it off, one of the best young players, Brooks Koepka is a shot behind.
This has to be huge for any golf fan like him and Larkin Collector.
I'm even going to be watching the final round to see if the old guy can hang on, hope he somehow
finds the magic to win this thing. B)

Speaking of LarkinCollector, he hasn't logged into the forum in 2 months, hope they're both ok.

I really thought after the first hole when Phil went from up one to down one it was going to
be a long day for him. Amazing how he hung in there and hit the shots when he needed to.
I was also riveted for the first time in a long time with a PGA tour event. :p

Do you think that opinion is just recency bias?

there is a reason why the champions tour exists: when golfers hit 50, they largely become irrelevant due to their inability to compete the way they once did. there is a gradual erosion of all facets of their game, and they can no longer hang with the young bucks as a result. prior to today, a grand total of 7 players in the history of golf had won a tournament at age 50 or older, with none of them being majors:

Phil, who is almost 51, had not cracked the top-20 in a tournament all season long, and his stats were not pretty. all of the minuses you see below are him losing strokes to the field in every facet of the game from tee to green. you may not be able to read it, but his tour rankings prior to this week were as follows:

    Off-the-tee (193rd), approach shots to the green (131st), around-the-green (158th), putting (122nd), tee-to-green (176th), total (175th)

in other words, no one with a blood alcohol concentration of zero predicted this would happen. he had 300-1 odds to win the PGA Championship. it's one of the greatest achievements not just in golf, but in any sport.

@galaxy27 I think I should have phrased my question differently.

Is it recency bias in saying it rivals Tiger in 19? Meaning, are you of the opinion that this is on par with what Tiger did then? Maybe (probably ) I am just asking the same question again, and again. Feel free to just copy your previous answer... 😂

<<< he had 300-1 odds to win the PGA Championship >>>

Maybe there will be a news story from Vegas about how some drunk gambler decided to place a dime on Phil Mickelson, and now plans on moving out of his dingy rental apartment into his own new house. :)

when you mentioned recency bias, i thought you were asking if i was giving Phil's accomplishment additional (or too much) weight just because it's fresh in my mind. but now i think we are on the same page.

it's in the same conversation with what Tiger did. in my heart of hearts, i didn't expect Phil to ever win again -- let alone a major -- for reasons detailed up above. what i did expect was what he did a couple of weeks ago at the Wells Fargo, when he shot an opening round 64.........followed by 75-76-76 to finish 69th. in other words, glimpses of what he once was. but over 72 holes? i never envisioned this.

Mickelson is known for foul balls off the tee that result in big numbers at the most inopportune time ('06 U.S. Open, anyone?). he avoided them yesterday. in fact, he drove the ball like a stallion. also consider who he was paired with. Koepka is an assassin in the majors -- especially when one is within his reach. PM outplayed him.

First John Daly, now Phil Mickelson.

What's next, maybe Jack Nicklaus snorts some Viagra and wins the next tourney? LOL

What, you don't think Phil was on a "magic elixir" of some sort?

In my opinion, at the very least it was Ginkgo Biloba. LOL

I'm glad it wasn't drugs or something else. Tom Brady has been doing a similar routine.

I know from experience, what Mickelson and Brady are doing works in so many positive ways. You don't have to be a super-star athlete to enjoy the wonderful benefits of a healthier body and a sharper mind. :)

Thanks - Gives me some more ammunition for future posts, not just here but on some other forums as well where almost anything is on topic.

Taking your word for it about how poorly Phil had been playing this season, the sudden turnaround is remarkable, if not breathtaking. The 300-1 odds clearly illustrated that.

I have a neighbor who hadn't been feeling well. I don't see her that often, but the last time i spoke to her was around a month ago, she had recently been in the hospital for a stomach illness. Long story short, i told her a month ago to eliminate cheese from her diet. Well i saw her the other day, and i was amazed at how well she looked. Her complexion looked much better, her hair had a glow to it, and i noticed a marked difference in her energy level and clearer voice. Frankly i had forgotten about the advice i gave her, she brought it up that she stopped eating cheese, and attributed the better health to that.

Mickelson took his diet to a disciplined, super-star level, and it paid off big time. I'm very happy for him. 👍
