I’m curious how to assess the grade/value of a coin. I’m looking at a nice AU example of a 1905 L&C gold comm dollar that has been made into a stick pin. The obverse (date side) has a slight scratch and the reverse has a small drop of solder to hold the stick pin. It’s worth $450-600 without the solder and pin, but how do you discount for the damage?
The person selling it to me is very reputable, I’m just curious how you discount for this sort of damage 30%, 50%? Is there a guide or do I just trust the dealer (who’s never done me wrong)
Thanks

Melt value (of about $89) is quite a bit too low.
Here's one removed from jewelry, that brought $329

And one mount removed, polished at $312

I don't know how the one being discussed compares, but I'd think minimum value would be $150-$175

Here’s a couple of pics. Seller asking about $250
It is not a nice AU. Probably VF cleaned.
