How Many Registered Sets Do you Have?

While conversing with ZARDOZ this morning about many topics, I brushed upon the fact that I have 16 sets that are in the registry, mostly '60's Baseball, with a few early '60's Football, a '71 Basketball and a Baseball Hall Of Fame set as well. I was just curious, am I the only maniac errr! genius to have this many? And by the way, these sets are all works in progress of sets that I am assembling, not just listing 1 card here or 1 card there to add to my numbers. If I did that I would no doubt exceed 100 sets...jay

I have 5 sets listed. 2 1981 Donruss Golf, 1964 Topps Giants, 1972 Topps Hockey, and 1961 Fleer Basketball. They are all currently "in progress", due to a limited income.
  • I currently have 12 sets I would say that I am actively working on below.... Out of these I am heavily concentrating on 6 of these sets:

    1934 Goudey
    1936 Goudey
    1968 Topps Game
    1969 Topps Decals
    1970 Kellogg's
    300 Great Baseball Cards...

The others unless I see a card I really like remain dormant and from some of the others I sell cards from time to time to fund the current top 6!

I currently have 11 sets registered plus the HOF set and 8 player sets. I have the following sets registered:

    1968-76
    1956
    1957

I have graded cards from other years as well, but I don't list a set if I have only a handful of cards. If I have a few % of the set, I'll list it. My main focus right now is grading out my 1969 set. After that, I'll probably move on to the 1971 set. I'll also be registering more player sets. Though I don't collect specific players, I get their sets by default as I grade out my complete sets.

I have 2 sets registered, the 1970 Rold Gold set and Don Mattingly player set. Once I get the few 1968 topps game cards I have graded, I'll have 3 sets on the registry.

I now have 82 sets I am trying to complete in psa 8 or better(e-mail me if you have cards I can use). These break down as follows

    11 pre-war baseball
    42 post-war baseball(1948-71)
    20 football(1935-65)
    8 basketball
    1 miscellaneous(33 goudey sport kings)

These exclude the Hall-of-Fame and player sets i have up(8 or so) which are not really sets in my opinion.
  • Davalillo - that's simply incredible! You collect entire sets in the same manner that most of us collect individual cards within a set. Your "set" just happens to be an entire collection of our sets if that makes any sense. Do you have any idea of how many total cards that would be? I'm just curious.

Also for you math wizards - it you were to display his collections continuously on a 8' wall - how long of wall would you need in your house? Could you imagine the size of the room you would need to display Davalillo's collection? That must be amazing.

    Wayne,

The last time I counted, it was between 13-15,000 psa graded cards but this is growing as I have been submitting 2,000-2,500 per quarter and buying/upgrading cards for my sets on a regular basis.. I am now submitting "modern cards" with the next batch probably being 1969-72 baseball, 1963-66 football and early 1970s basketball.
  • Unbelievable.

Folks, we have a winner. (Perhaps a lottery or sweepstakes winner, as well.)

Let's see, 15,000 graded cards times $6 bulk grading fee. Hmm...that's pushing $100k in plastic alone. CU should have you on their Board of Directors, or at least your picture hanging in the lobby.

    Congratulations. I guess.

Davalillo collects more sets than there are cards in either of the two sets I collect...

    Davalillo (82 Sets)

    1964 Topps Giants (60 cards)

    1970 Kellogg's (75 Cards)

Talk about your feelings of inadequacy.

I think you could build a house out of Davalillo's sets, so you wouldn't really need the wall.

I've got 2 PSA sets at the moment, 75T and 71T Greatest Moments. 715 cards and I'm out of there image. The 71s are pretty tough to come by, on the whole, while the 75s are in a state of flux at the moment. Probably due to the 70s special, big lots of 75 common 8s are popping up on ebay and going for less than the price of grading, sometimes even less than 7s had been going for. There doesn't seem to be much of a challenge there, just a matter of throwing money at it. I am not sure, but it doesn't look like there are any cards that have low pops for reasons other than they just haven't been submitted. No variations, no errors, no notoriously tough cards.

For years I've been working on ungraded 41 Play Ball and 55 Bowman sets, but both in such low grade (generously VG) it wouldn't be worth getting them graded. Maybe a 53B or 51B should be next? On the card-a-month plan. Like an encyclopedia subscription, after a few years eventually you would get the whole world in your mailbox.
