Belichick also hates new jersey rule

Bill Belichick is not a fan of the new jersey rule.

Tom Brady isn’t the only one that has some issues with the NFL’s new single-digit jersey rule.

According to Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio, Bill Belichick “hates” the new rule and the Patriots were one of the only teams to vote against it. Changes need to be vetoed by nine teams and the dissenters didn’t reach that mark.

On Wednesday the owners passed a new rule that allows anybody but offensive and defensive linemen to wear numbers between 1-19, including linebackers and defensive backs.

Brady was furious.

The normally mild-mannered quarterback took to social media and blasted the change in multiple posts. He doesn’t think it’s fair to the offenses that need to identify blitzers.

“Good luck trying to block the right people now!!!!” Brady posted on his Instagram story. “Going to make for a lot of bad football.”

He wasn’t done. Later the quarterback doubled down. Brady tagged both the NFL and NFLPA in the second post and wrote “DUMB” in huge letters at the top of it.

“Why not let the lineman (sic) wear whatever they want too?” Brady wrote. “Why have numbers? Just have colored jerseys... why not wear the same number? ...DUMB.”

Expanded jersey numbers haven’t been an issue at the college level, but obviously the NCAA product isn’t as finely-tuned as the NFL.

However, if a player wants to change his number this season, it’s going to hit him in the wallet: The player will be responsible for buying out all of the team’s current inventory, per ESPN’s Kevin Seifert. If the he waits until 2022, he won’t be charged.

Here’s how the new jersey numbers will look in 2021:

Quarterbacks, punters and kickers: 1-19

Defensive backs: 1-49

Running backs, fullbacks, tight ends and wide receivers: 1-49, 80-89

Offensive linemen: 50-79

Defensive linemen: 50-79, 90-99

Linebackers: 1-59, 90-99
