Big Offers...in today's climate
Hi guys. I received an offer last night for a 1962 Topps card. I was thrown a bit because I didn't know the person (he checks out ok) and wasn't sure how he even knew I owned the card. Anyway, his offer was...strong. I'd be saying goodbye, forever, to the card as it took me years to find it. What's strange--and the reason for the post is, as big as the offer was, I'm afraid to let it go too cheap!!! With some of the ridiculous prices people are paying--and the difficulty of the card--it feels like there is no real defined market on some cards right now. Is this my imagination? I paid almost 700 bucks last year for my '70 Tony Perez. It felt stupid, but I needed for my set. A poorly centered 9 just sold for 3300.00 last week!
Bottom line what's a good price for a legitimately high-end, chip-free, dead centered '62 Frank Robinson NM-MT 8 (understanding that price is inflated a bit for a set builder or Perez collector).
Thank you for your input.

Well over 2000. That is one tough card. centered even tougher. I had to settle for a well centered 6. and it was 200. They do not come up for sale often.
That card is a real toughie. Between $2500 and $3000 is what I think it could fetch. Love the ‘62 Frank - it has been on my list for a while and it is another card that I will buy lower grade than I originally planned.
I will weigh in here. It is an extremely difficult card w/o question in high grade: (0 )10s, (1) 9, (0) 8.5s and just (40) 8s. I have seen the lone psa-9 at a National when Bill Goodwin owned it and he was asking $6k at least 10 years ago...beautiful card with centering 50/50 left to right and 60/40 top to bottom.
I own a PSA-8 (see below) and paid $2500+ 2-3 years ago. In today's market at auction...it would not surprise me to see it fetch $5000-$7500. As pointed out...the card just does not come up for sale very often in high grade...just 41 copies that I would consider high end. This copy is not for sale...too difficult to replace and I love the photo! 1962s are beautiful when nice.
So, what was the offer?

minton that is a beauty!
My Dad grew up in Ohio and loved Frank! For some reason he doesn't get much discussion as an all time great.

Yeah.... He seems to be left out of a lot of those conversations, I do not understand why. The Frank cards I own (Mid 70's in PSA9) seem have moved up only very slightly in value in the current euphoria.
1975 Frank Robinson, I had one that was in cat-toy condition as a child years after it was issued but in the 1980's seeing 500HR's on the back of card meant something. It remains one of my favorite 1970's cards.

The last VCP sale was last July for $2760. So I think it would go for $4k+ today if it's a solid 8. The market has been a bit hit or miss on commons but not for stars. I just picked up a '62 Witt PSA 8 for ~$1600 which is in line with historical sales. But I'm not expecting to be able to pick up any stars from the set at last year's prices.
to cover this topic w a very broad stroke, one of the best pieces of advice i got was “its better to sell a year early than 1 day late”. you can always hold your head high on accepting the current highest price for the card or you can always kick yourself for not accepting the offer when it hits the floor.
The vintage market IMO is coming to terms with it's inherent low pops...... as new collectors identify and flock to the /5's, /10's, /199's of the modern refractors and limited serial # auto's etc.... ~ they are now translating those same fundamentals to very low proportional vintage card pops and I can tell you I am no longer selling my high grade vintage ~ not until it shakes out...... I think the next leg up is the vintage market HOF'er's ~ ALL OF 'EM.
Sounds like you are in a strong position Negotiation wise. If you don’t really want to sell price it at a number that makes you forget the card. If you want to sell be fair and strong price wise. You can always say no.
Only 40 Psa 8s and mainly goes for 2500, I think many would love to pay 100k for all 40 Psa 8s and corner that market. I can see that card exploding in value. I’d ask 10k with such a low pop and key card for the set.
I sometimes , but not often think of the cards I should have sold long ago.(Greg Jeffries, Canseco etc) but I always remember with great regret the ones I loved and sold. (1955 Aaron, 57 Maris, 38 JOE D. and on and on). Do not sell unless you need the money.
Wow.

That Frank is just a screamer. Very Nice.
I would say that whatever the value its the highest it has ever been.

I sold it. The price was 9500.00 and just too necessary at the moment. I will miss the card badly, but 9500.00 gets a house painted, a new dishwasher and satisfies my deductible for a leak in the ceiling. I honestly don't know if I would have sold it for less--even though the profit was large. This thread actually helped me with the decision. Thank you all!
Question: I am not familiar at all with all with VCP and auction/sale tracking. Is this something I should report? Like give sale date, buyer/seller, etc.?

Congrats on the sale. I'm pretty sure that VCP doesn't accept sales data from private sales.
Wow...higher than I expected! Still holding mine...
and you cant put a price on knocking a lil stress off the plate by accomplishing some of those things off of the to-do list! sounds like a win-win to me. congrats!
Here’s mine, available

Great price for a great card. I was seriously off in what I thought 8s go for. 40 is a very low number of PSA 8s considering Mays is a toughie and has double that amount.
Thank you, guys. I really appreciate the help and support. It's so ridiculous that we get so attached to these cards, Lol.
_You're very right. _The painter is here today and I'll be out looking at dishwashers this week!
