PSA Price Guide Average Price Question

Can anyone tell me how many transactions are used to determine the average price in the PSA Price Guide? With all of the recent high activity there is a big discrepancy for many cards between a their average price and their most recent price. Of course this makes sense with the high prices being realized today but I'm wondering if they look back at a certain number of sales, or sales in a given time frame, or all sales of a card to determine it's average price.

Thanks

Do a search, we have discussed it before. It seems to be about a year behind in pricing.

Successful coin BST transactions with Gerard and segoja.

Successful card BST transactions with cbcnow, brogurt, gstarling, Bravesfan 007, and rajah 424.

I did a search, my question is not so much how far behind pricing is but rather what prices are used to determine the Average Price. Thanks anyway for responding

Search basically explains that SMR is not kept up to date. Most people put more value into ebay completed sales, VCP, etc... I do like it to find info on the really old stuff.

The Beckett price guide is better.

  • I’m sure you realize this but there is an SMR price and an average price that are two different things. The average price is listed in the auction section of the price guide and appears to be continually updated as new auctions occur. I don’t know how far it goes back when it does it’s averaging but most likely not too far as the average and most recents usually don’t differ by a drastic amount.

I find that the SMR price is only useful for a general indication. If you’re going to go throw out a bid on something and want to have a realistic idea of what it’s going to end up going for, the SMR price is not useful and you’d instead want to consult the most recent and average prices in the auction section.

I was wondering the same thing, and was unable to reproduce the average they state. I looked at the last 50 PSA 10 Jordans, which is listed as an average sales price of $455,570.22. I averaged the last two, then the last three, etc, and none of them averaged $455,570.22. Maybe it's some sort of time-weighted average.

No such details will spoil my plans...

Exactly, I was not referring to the SMR at all but rather the average price in the auction section. It does update quite regularly but I was just trying to find out if the average is always including the most recent price and how many prices go into the average.

No big deal, I was just curious and couldn't seem to figure it out
