One of CBS’ British golf analysts went on and on about how great it is to have the first Asian major winner while all other CBS analysts/announcers remained silent, and were likely indicating to the guy off -camera that Tiger Woods is half-Asian.

Is golf in Japan just like baseball, or is golf in Japan just like golf in America ?

my first thought to the above hartsfield airport post was "no sponsor private jet home?"

don't get me wrong, had to be a thrill of a lifetime seeing masters champ w jacket strolling thru the airport. if i just won the masters, i can get some late night waffle house now, but hartsfield airport monday am during covid? ahh thanks but no thanks. i'd rather swim back to japan.

I would argue it's bigger in Japan.

I haven't been to Japan in close to 20 years, but I remember the major sporting goods stores having a ticker type display for the buy/sell spread of golf club memberships in the area. Can you imagine - flipping membership?

yep. more based on the cost of real estate to have an 18 hole golf course. its also why they have driving ranges w 10 floors. you even have to be a member of the “driving range” to get a slot on the first 3 floors of one of those. went about 5 years ago and the entire culture was simply fascinating. i still can't get over just how clean everything was. didnt see 1 piece of trash in shibuya square. definitely couldnt say the same about times square.

Agree with driving ranges and having to be members.

Went over in 1993 on a youth professional exchange through Rotary International. Can not understand why Japan has Rotary when they pronounce "r" as "l".

We were on the southern island Kyushu and we were taken everywhere by the Rotary members. Being on time was also big, never early or late. I remember one time we were early for our hand off to the next city's rotary and we stopped by the road and some of the guys got out and swung drivers until it was time to get going.

Many other stories, but the other one to share was in one city my host family was an arranged marriage between the families.

And congrats Hideki. It was earned.
