Derek Lowe= AL Cy-Young

Derek Lowe: 28 years old. Right handed starting pitcher. He may have the best sinker in baseball.
Outstanding changeup. Made All-Star team in 2000 as a closer. Best setup man in 1999.

In 2002: 12-4 with 2.36 ERA

How many games will he win? His ERA at end of season? Cy-Young winner, to be?

My prediction? 21-7 with 2.99 ERA

Regards,
Robert A

  • As a Red Sox fan, last year I wanted the man dead, and this year he is slowly but surely winning back my trust. Due to the fact the Red Sox haven't won a Series since 1918, and I have witnessed first hand devestation when victory seemed to be at hand. I can't help but see Lowe have a losing record in the second half.

PLEASE GOD LET THIS NOT BE SO!

With my luck, Lowe will win over 20 games, the Red Sox will win the AL East, and the players will strike. Babe Ruth, you can kiss my ass, when will the curse be lifted?

Sorry for going waaaaaay off course, but you did ask for opinions.

Freddy Garcia will give Lowe a run for his money for the Cy Young...
  • Dodgamatic,

I too am a Red Sox fan. However, unlike yourself, I am a big time supporter of Derek Lowe's. Last year he didn't pitch as poorly as some think. When you don't have defense, esp. up the middle, with a sinker ball pitcher you are screwed.

Lowe was the best setup man in 1999, a dominate closer in 2000 and in 2001 didn't pitch that badly.
The kid has very good stuff- even the NY Yankees saw the talent and that's why they contacted Dan Duquette after 1999, about a deal for Lowe.

Besides, Red Sox have a very easy schedule in July and September, it's very unlikely Lowe has a poor
second half- he'll be facing Tampa Bay a few more times and he owns them.

  • Hi SlipKnot515,

I like Freddy Garcia, the former Astro pitching prospect. However, I think Barry Zito may give Lowe a run for his money at winning the AL Cy-Young award.

  • I agree with you, if you read what I said, "I am slowly but surely gaining trust in the man". I had high hopes for Lowe last year, and he couldn't pitch 1 inning without giving up a dozen runs to blow an easy save. Last year, I think it was against Tampa Bay, he blew a 2 run lead and got the loss, not to mention the other blows against sub-par teams last year. He is by far a better starter, but they didn't find that out until the season was a wash last year. I have hung with the Red Sox for 30 years. I have MANY friends and family that have given up on them, but I still sit in front of my TV for 160+ games cheering and yelling (sometimes in joy, sometimes in disgusted anger). I will tell you this, I am very surprised the Yanks didn't get him and have him pitch the way he is now. Now that would have been typical!

  • Hi Dodgamatic,

30+ years? Wow. I've been a Red sox fan since 1981 image I attended a wedding last weekend- it was the first Sox game I've missed in 15 years, either live, on radio or tv.

I keep hearing Sox fans want Thome. I'd ake Thome if Indians will tak Clark or Offerman. NO way in hell, I'd give up Fossum for Thome. Why you ask?

Thome is what 34 years old and a free-agent to be.

Fossum is a 24 year old lefty who throws 94/95 mph and a changeup that really moves, esp. against
    righties.

I still don't like the Baker for Embree deal, I think that deal is going to back fire in a year or two.
I'v happend to watch Baker pitch and he looks like a young Pedro. Besides our farm is weak as is.
How many times have we seen Sox prospects dealt for quick fixes and those prospects become either good or ALL-Stars? image

I was at the Braves game last night and had the chance to watch the young prospect Mark Prior pitch for the Cubs and he did an outstanding job. Allowed only 1 earned run and 3 hits through about 6 innings, until the bullpen came in and that's when we started to kill the Cubs. But, Mark Prior has a bright future ahead of him in my opinion.

Derek Lowe, I say he'll choke a little bit and only win 19 games. I say his final record will be 19-8 with a 3.02 ERA.
  • We are singing the same song my friend. I like Casey, but the boy needs to gain about 20 pounds. As a former skinny pitcher, I spent less time on ice when I added 20 pounds and spent the off season in the gym. The only reason I would like to have Tomme on the team, is because he kills the ball at Fenway. But, your right, who the heck are we going to deal for him. I still have faith in Offerman, I guess I feel the same way about him as you do about Lowe. The Red Sox are very comparable to the Patriots, being they have a few big names and alot of good role players................then again, what the hell am I talking about, half the team is going to the All-Sars, LOL. I don't see a BIG trade coming before the deadline, I see it very unlikely. If the Red Sox finish ahead of the Yanks, you can bet your house, they will real in a big fish, but not right now.

  • Hi Dodgamatic,

My 5500 votes for Damon, worked, LOL. I've been a Damon fan since his rookie season in KC.
I would like to see Sox add another young and strong starting pitcher to the rotation. Sox have to many
pitchers past their baseball primes in their rotation. I didn't think Arrojo would last. I am not high on Castillo's fastball- seems to straight. Burkett is a short term solution.

I'd also love to see Sox add another speedster to roster. As you saw the other day, speed wins close games. You run, pitch and play defense, you will win alot of the 1 run games.

The only thing I dislike about Graddy Little's managing is, he doesn't manufature runs as much as he should. I'd like to see the squeeze play more often.

Speaking of trades, I'd love to see Sox go get Roy Halladay, a 25 year old RHP. I've heard Jays are shopping everyone.

    Thanks,
    Robert A
  • Roy Halladay sucks image. and Mussina will also give Lowe a run for the Cy, Zito's gonna win it though, if everything goes well.
  • About Lowe, I predict a 16-9 record and a 4.39 ERA. Cy who?
For the NL, depending on how long Glavine is out, it'll be a race between him and Schilling.
