Air in slab?

Just got a few cards back from psa. This one has some air or something between the card and soft plastic sleeve inside the slab. Hurts the presentation. Will psa fix this or do I have to pay to have it changed? If I sort of press the slab the bubbles move around.

Don’t know the answer but that’s a nice card.

These are called “Newton Rings.” They are a common problem with CGC slabs for comics. They are caused by two pieces of plastic touching, so they usually wouldn’t affect PSA cases, but the inner plastic sleeve is the culprit.

Do they go away on their own? I have hundreds of slabbed psa cards but nothing like this. Feels like I should get it fixed before selling the card

No, they typically don’t go away. I have never seen newton rings on PSA cases that have the inner sleeve due to the card being oversized. Maybe this is a different kind of inner sleeve? I would be concerned the same thing could happen again if they re-slab it the same way.

Ironically, you see the same effect on your empty card savers in the photo.

i had this on one of my Rocky Maivia 1997 Panini rookie cards that i got back from PSA. It was on the back so iit was easier to live with but I sold the card.

Is it a very shiny or glossy sticker ?
Depending on the label stock it was printed on, or if a coating was added to it, it is most likely a "static cling" effect.
You could try and gently "tap" the holder and see if the card breaks loose.

I think this may be a defect caused by a new plastic sleeve for undersized items. I just got one back from PSA last week with an ugly mess on the back. Thankfully it’s a blank-back issue so it doesn’t destroy the eye appeal; the front is fine. But this is potentially a $2,000-plus item, and I’m not happy.

looks like they are going the BGS route now instead of smaller holders or the older poly sleeved slabs. one thing I hated with BGS was the use of the crimped sleeves which always seemed foggy/hazy and had defects. loved PSA holders for their clarity. strange thing is you usually only see newton rings on slabs that touch chrome type cards with the smooth topcoat, never on paper cards. must be something up with these new sleeves.

I would rather have it in one of the other slabs like this, which wasn't graded too long ago vs the one in the pic.

Newton Rings do not alter the item. Here is what they look like on Jumbo slabs.

Holy crap what are the odds?!??! The card i just got back is the same Maradona issue!!!! 😂 Not even 20 PSA-slabbed ones in the world. Mine’s just a 1.5, though, not as nice as your (terrific looking) 3.5.

well it isn't mine! thats one thats posted on ebay. I just scanned your QR code to find out what card you posted and went to find a similar one to see what type of holders they used previously to show you.

Ahhh! I see. Haha. Yeah, they just started with the new sleeves in the past 1-2 months I think.

  • What has been everyone's resolution/decision on this issue?

I have a card with this same problem, not sure when it was slabbed, probably less than a year old.

I just bought it off eBay, it's not a high value card, but a rare card, so a bit disappointing. I may just take it out and pop it in a one touch.

Is it bad that I looked and felt some relief that a new poster TTT a thread that was "only" two years since the last post?

My recently returned sub with smaller than standard size cards where PSA used a mylar sleeve, they all had the "Newton rings." So PSA has done nothing to fix the issue in at least 2 years since the original post?

Never heard of these "Newton Rings" before much less seen them on a slab.

I can say with absolute certainty it would drive me crazy though

My card is a standard size, it's like the sleeve is too big for the case, and is squished in there causing it to bubble/raise on the sides

Your card is smaller than the 'rails' around it, so they add a mylar sleeve to help prevent the card from tilting and shifting around like this:

I just think it's a cheap workaround. With what PSA charges, they should provide slabs to better fit the different sized cards.

Gotcha, it's pretty disappointing. I went and looked at an older PSA I have and see the differences now. I don't have many from PSA, another newer one I have looks good, even with the sleeve. You have to look real close on that one to see the sleeve

This one is pretty bad =(

I got a few of my MSA Discs right side up, but the rest are at various degrees to completely upside down. LOL
And I really prefer the older slabs that had the round recessed area made for the Discs, over the square ones.
Good example of PSA eliminating a more custom fit slab, instead using a universal slab, to cut cost I suppose.
They should be moving in the other direction.
