I guess this is an Austrian medal or a spielmarke.??

My friend has 4 of them and we can not figure out why there is this rectangle counter-stamp in the Obverse.
in each one.
does anyone have any idea?

    That's not a counter stamp. It looks like a socket for a mount with some weld material left over. Perhaps it was a button or cuff-link.

    Agree. Can't be a counterstamp unless the token was resting on the reverse die when stamped, as there is no distortion on the reverse.

    all 4 have this identical indent.
